Obstacles that stand in the way of becoming an effective listener-
Prejudging - Do You
1. Tune out when something is boring
2. Tune out when you do not agree with the information
3. Argue mentally with the speaker about the information
4. Do not listen to people you do not like
5. Make decisions about information before understanding all of it's implications or consequences
Talking - Do You
1. Interrupt the speaker so that you can say what you want
2. Think of your next statement while other are talking
3. Let your mind wander when others talk
4. Answer your own questions
5. Answer questions that are asked of other people
Emotions - Do You
1. Get angry before you hear the whole story
2. Lok for underlying or hidden messages in information
3. Begin listening on a negative note
4. Base your opinions of information on what others are saying or doing
5. Readily accept information as correct from people whom you like or respect
If you answered yes to two or more in each of the three sections, those are the obstacles that keep you from being a good listener. Although this section in school was a couple weeks back, I remember this one as one that got me to stop and think.
