“Hey guys!” Phoebe called out as she entered Central Perk. “What’s going on?”

Monica snorted and shifted over a little on the couch to make room for Phoebe. “Ross has been telling us about his new boyfriend. For about the past two hours.”

“Must you all be immature about this? He is not my boyfriend,” Ross said, glaring at his sister. “And I’ve only talked about him for, what? Five minutes, tops.”

“Felt a lot longer to me,” said Joey, who was wearing that pained and slightly glazed over expression he’d adopt whenever Ross would start talking about his job.

“Ooh, I wanna know who you’re talking about!” Phoebe said brightly.

“Dr. Mohinder Suresh. He’s a geneticist, and the stuff he’s been telling me about that field has been really -”

Everyone except Phoebe slumped in their seats and pretended to snore, which made Ross stop mid-sentence.

“Hey now, come on!” he cried. “What’s wrong with me telling stories about work?”

“We’ve already gone over this with you,” Chandler said to him in a patronizing voice.  “It’s.  Boring.”

Ross rolled his eyes. “Anyway, Phoebe, I think you’d really like Dr. Suresh. He’s intelligent, he’s friendly, and he’s really enthusiastic about science!”

“Yeah, he's perfect for you,” Rachel said mockingly. “So you’ll be inviting us all to the wedding, then?”

“You guys...” Ross whined, but his pleas were drowned out by his friends’ laughter.

“Well, if we’re talking about that already, then this can only end in one way, and it rhymes with 'schmivorce',” Chandler quipped as he got up from his end of the couch.

“Intercourse?” Joey asked.

Chandler stopped in his tracks, turned to the others, and said, “Y’know, I’d correct him, but I’m still reeling from the fact that he actually knows a word that long.”

“Hey, if it has to do with sex...” Joey said, winking at Phoebe.

The next day, Mohinder stopped by Ross’s office. They discussed their classes for a while, and as they talked, Ross tried to keep the previous day’s conversation as far from his thoughts as he possibly could.

Because, of course, he wasn’t attracted to Professor Suresh. Nope, not even a little bit.

“We should meet up for dinner tonight,” Mohinder said casually as Ross got up from behind his desk. “I’m afraid I don’t know very many people here, and I’d like to learn more about the specifics of evolution from someone who has more knowledge in that area.”

“What - um, really?” Ross squeaked, freezing and feeling his face turn hot. “I... yeah, dinner would be great!”  He lowered his voice so that it would sound as stereotypically macho and manly as he could make it, and cleared his throat. “I’ve, uh, got your number, so I’ll just call you when I’m free.”

“Excellent.” Mohinder turned to leave, and he nearly ran right into Emma’s stroller, which was being pushed into the office by Rachel. “Oh, excuse me.”

“No, pardon me!” Rachel said, sounding a little too flustered. As she conspicuously turned around to check out the other professor before closing the door, Ross made his way around the table to bend down at Emma’s height.

“Hi!” Ross cooed, picking his daughter up. Fixing Rachel with a suspicious look, he said, “Well, this is new. What are you doing here? Planning to sit in with Emma on one of my lectures?”

Rachel whipped her head back around to face him, and immediately burst into laughter. He stared at her, waiting until her fits of giggles subsided.

“Oh, you’re serious! No. I just wanted to swing by so you could see Emma for a little bit.”

“Thanks,” Ross said sarcastically. “It’s nice to know that you care.”

“Was that him?” Rachel asked. “The guy you were talking about yesterday?”

“Doctor Suresh? Yes, that’s him.” Ross couldn’t help but feel a little smug when he noticed Rachel’s eyes growing wider and wider.

“But - but he’s beautiful!” she exclaimed. “Way too pretty to be a teacher.”

“See? That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you,” he said as he gently placed Emma back in her stroller. “Smart people can be hot!”

“Okay,” she replied, chuckling a little while kneeling down to straighten Emma’s bonnet. Afterward, she paused, then stood back up to look at Ross. “Wait, so you are admitting that he’s attractive?”

Ross snorted, then mumbled, “He’s not ugly.”

“You like him!”

“He’s a colleague and, at this point, I’d say he’s a friend. So yes, you're right. I do like him.”

“Oh, you know what I mean!” Rachel went over to Ross and poked him in the chest. “You like him like him.”

“No, no,” he said, backing away from her and raising both his hands. “I - I think you’re misinterpreting things, here. I just admire the guy, that’s all.”

“Right,” Rachel said slowly, grinning and crossing her arms over her chest. “Well, I gotta say, Ross, this is really cute. Y’know, if it wasn’t for your crush on me in high school, I would’ve thought you were gay back then. Maybe you've just been bisexual this whole time and didn't realize it until now.”

“I'm not!” Ross retorted. “Really. As a matter of fact, I’ll have you know that he asked me to meet him for dinner tonight, but it doesn’t mean anything. It’s just going to be a couple of college professors meeting up to talk about science, and school, and...”

“...S-e-x?” Rachel finished with a smirk.

“Some mother you are,” Ross chided her, but she waved him off with a smirk still on her face.

“It’s okay if you like him, Ross. I’m not going to judge you. Laugh at you, yes, but not judge you.”

He sighed, shaking his head as she checked her watch.

“I should go put Emma down for a nap now, so I’ll see you later?” Rachel went over to the other side of the stroller, and, even though Ross was still feeling a little sore, he moved to open the door for her.

“Yeah,” he replied while Rachel rolled Emma out into the hallway. “I’ll tell you about the intelligent, professional, and not at all sexual dinner I’m going to have with my colleague. Not crush. Colleague.”

“All right, Ross,” Rachel said goodnaturedly, then looked down at the stroller. “Say goodbye to your gay daddy, sweetheart!”

Ross stared up at the ceiling in exasperation.

That night, Ross met up with Dr. Suresh at a nice little Italian place that Ross figured none of his friends might know about - and, therefore, wouldn't show up at in order to spy on him.

Both him and Mohinder talked, drank, and ate easily together, but throughout the entire meal, Ross was trying desperately hard not to look too much at the other man.

It wasn’t that Ross was attracted to Mohinder, of course. Yet... there was something about the way Mohinder was looking that night. The way the lights in the room landed on his face, his hair, his -

No, Ross thought to himself as he lifted his wine glass up to cover his mouth and pretended to be interested in the conversation at the next table. It’s just what the others said. It’s getting to you. You do not like him like that.

“I’m glad we could come here tonight,” Mohinder said. “To be honest, I was a little apprehensive about asking you to meet me here, but it was a good thing that I went through with it.”

Ross set his glass back down on the table, clearing his throat.  Okay, you’re doing good, he told himself. Just keep playing it cool.

“I am also glad we came here tonight,” he replied awkwardly.

“Is everything fine, gentlemen?” their waiter asked as he came up to them.

“Yes. The food was excellent,” Mohinder said.

I wish I had an English accent too, Ross mused, staring at Mohinder - then he immediately snapped out of his reverie. Oh my God, what am I thinking?

“Yeah,” he managed to grunt. “I think we’re ready for the check now, right?” To his relief, Mohinder nodded in agreement.

“Right away,” the waiter said, then left.

“Actually, I was wondering if you’d like to come over to my place tonight,” Mohinder said, leaning forward in his chair and lowering his voice. “I’ve been wanting to discuss some of my father’s - and, well, my theories with you, but I realized that this wasn’t the place to do that.”

Ross froze. He just sat in his seat, looking directly at Mohinder for a period of silence that lasted much, much too long.

Say something! he shouted at himself when Mohinder furrowed his brow a little in confusion. Anything!

“If you’re not comfortable with that,” Mohinder said slowly, “then I understand.”

“No!” Ross practically shouted. Lowering his voice, he said, “I mean, uh, that would be great. I just...” he pretended to yawn. “I’m a little beat right now, so maybe I could come over some other time? O-or you could come to my place.”

“I understand,” Mohinder replied, beaming at him. “And yes, I’d like that very much.”

God, why is he so pretty? Ross moaned silently as the waiter returned with the bill. Grateful for the interruption, Ross reached out for the check, but Mohinder snatched it up before he could.

“I’ll take care of this,” he said over Ross’s weak protests. “Next time, it can be your turn.”

“Sure,” Ross squeaked.

When Mohinder got out his wallet and turned his attention toward the check, Ross looked off into the distance, thinking, Well, at least he’s not your cousin.

After slamming the door behind himself, Ross stormed into Monica and Chandler’s apartment.

Joey, who was sitting at the table in the kitchen, looked up quickly, and then grinned when he saw Ross’s expression.

“Wow, why so grouchy? Didn’t get any action on your date last night, huh?”

Ross glared at him. “Hah hah.”

“Hey Ross! How did it go with Professor Suresh?” Phoebe asked from the living room.

“It was... nice.”  In an effort to appear more nonchalant about the whole thing, Ross pulled out a chair and sat down at the kitchen table as he blinked and tried not to glower so much. “Where's Chandler and Mon?” he asked.

“Oh, they had to go to a thing tonight,” Phoebe said.

“A thing? Where?”

“Duh, at the thing!”

“What...  Oh, forget it,” Ross huffed.

“Hey, cheer up buddy!” Joey told him. He leaned in conspiratorially toward Ross. “You know what would make you feel better? Rach said she knows some other guys she can hook you up with -”

“- Okay, I get it!” Ross exploded, unable to control himself any longer. “I have a crush on my co-worker! I like guys! There, you’ve all had your fun, but can you please stop it already?”

Joey stared at him. “Geez, you’re cranky when you’re into dudes.”

Ross opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, Joey pushed back his chair, got up, and headed over to the door. “Okay, well, as much as I'd love to hear Ross yell some more, I gotta go.”

“Have fun at that thing!” Phoebe called out to him, and he waved at her before he left.

After a moment or two of silence, Ross stood up from the table and went to the living room. He sat down on the couch next to Phoebe, and she looked over at him, smiling almost expectantly.

He drew in a deep breath. “Phoebe, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

He hesitated, then said quickly, “Have you ever liked other women? As in, like like?”

“Oh, loads!” Phoebe said instantly, lowering her magazine and turning her attention on Ross. “I may be with Mike, but I’ve still got a thing for the ladies! Actually, now that you ask, I think you should know that when I was living with Monica, I…” she trailed off when Ross gave her a pointed look. “But that’s not important. Why do you ask?”

He sighed, then, looking away from her, he mumbled, “I… I think… I think I might really have a crush on Doctor Suresh.”

“Really?” Phoebe gushed. “And you wanted to talk to me about it?”

He nodded, meeting her eyes. “Yeah. I, uh, thought it might help me to talk to you about this rather than anyone else. Maybe you can help me.”

“Oh, yay! This is so exciting!” she exclaimed, dropping her magazine and clapping her hands gleefully.

“What?” Ross grimaced. “No, it’s not! I’ve always liked girls, okay?”

“Always?” she asked him as she raised one eyebrow.

“Women,” he corrected firmly. “I liked girls when I was younger, and now, I like women. Not. Guys.”

“But this is different, right?”

“Yes, and it’s freaking me out! Today I just looked at him when he passed by my office, and he smiled at me, and...” Ross began to dreamily focus on something behind Phoebe's head.

She patted his leg, which made him snap back to the present. “Well, I think it’s sweet, and it’s okay if you feel weird about it - but you shouldn't.  I mean, it's not like you’re the only one who’s confused.”

“Huh?” Ross said. “Wha - you know other people who have this problem?”

“Oh, definitely. I remember I went through the same thing after my first threesome..." She giggled. "Oh, and there’s my friend Benny, and Chandler, of course, and -”

“- Wait,” Ross interrupted. “Chandler? Phoebe, he’s married. To my sister.”

“So?” Phoebe asked, and Ross began to rub his face with one hand.

“Look, never mind Chandler," he said. "What do you think I should do about this? I feel like I’m losing my mind here. He’s all I could think about today! I even started to say his name in one of my classes, and then I had to pretend that there actually was a dinosaur called the Mohindasaurus.”

Phoebe burst out laughing, but tried to regain her composure when she saw Ross’s sober expression. “Okay, okay, I’m sorry. Now I’m going to be honest with you. First of all, do you think that this guy might be attracted to you?  Because my plan won't work if he isn't."

Ross thought about it for a moment before answering.  "Y'know, at first I thought he was just being really polite, but he... did ask me to have dinner with him.  He did seem pretty interested in talking about personal, non-sciency things last night.  He keeps giving me these looks, and he said he wants to meet up again.  Yeah." He nodded, already feeling more confident about his assumptions.  "I think he really has been trying to send me some signals, and it's not like he has an ulterior motive, like wanting a higher grade in my class or anything, so he must really want me... for me."  In spite of all his reservations, Ross began to grin.  Yep, I've still got it, he thought.

"All right, then," Phoebe said.  "Then I think it's pretty obvious what you've gotta do."

The grin on Ross's face wavered.  “What?”

“Make out with him.”

“Make out with - no!” Ross exclaimed. “That's your plan?  Why d’you think I should do that?”

“Well, because it will let you know how you really feel about Mohinder. If you make a physical move on him and like it, then that means you really are attracted to him. If you don’t feel anything, then it’ll mean that you only like him as a person.”

Ross mulled over that for a moment, then he brightened a little. “You know what? You could be right. I - I could have gotten so caught up in all your jokes that I ended up taking them seriously, and then somehow, my wires got crossed. I mean, I didn’t start thinking too much about how attractive he is until Rachel pointed it out to me.”

“Yeah, she won't shut up about him,” Phoebe interjected. “So if it doesn’t work out between you two, give him Rachel’s number, okay?”

Ross rolled his eyes as he replied sarcastically, “Yeah, I’ll do that.” His face started to flush when he reflected on Phoebe’s advice. “But Pheebs, I don’t know if I can make out with him. I’ve never kissed a guy before.”

“Sure you have! What about the time you kissed Joey to help him with an audition?”

After Ross recalled the memory, he tilted his head to one side, then muttered, “Damn, I forgot he told you about that. But, excluding him, I haven’t kissed any guys.”

“Really?  So you still don't remember getting drunk during the New Year's Eve party and going up to Chandler and -”

“- Phoebe, please!” Ross cried. “What, do you keep a list detailing every single gay moment between all of us?”

“Oh, I’ve got a whole book full of them!” Phoebe said with a grin, and, once again, Ross fell back against the couch, rubbing his forehead wearily.

“This is lovely,” Mohinder remarked as he took off his jacket. “Now I’m a little relieved that we ended up coming here instead of my place.”

“Oh, it’s nothing special,” Ross said, taking Mohinder’s jacket to place it on the coat rack, but he couldn’t help feeling a little proud of himself.

“The décor is fantastic,” Mohinder went on as he ventured further into Ross’s apartment. “And it looks like you have a wonderful view over there.”

“No! No, not at all!” Ross yelped, running over to the window and covering it as quickly as he could. If Phoebe had told the others about his plans for tonight - and it was more than likely that she did - then there was a 99.9% chance that all his friends were already gathered together in Monica’s apartment in order to spy on Mohinder and Ross.

When Ross finished covering up the window, he stood back and looked over at Mohinder, laughing mirthlessly. “Nothin’ special over there!”

Mohinder furrowed his brow a little, then cocked his head to the side in confused acceptance and went over to the couches.

“Um, would you like something to drink? I - I have wine,” Ross offered. He immediately berated himself for sounding so lame, and for not having any beer.

“Yes, that would be fine.”

After telling Mohinder to make himself at home, Ross went into the kitchen. He poured out two glasses of red wine, then took a couple of deep breaths.

Okay, you can do this. It’s no big deal. It’s just a kiss. It’d be like if you brought a woman over here. A beautiful Indian woman. A beautiful Indian woman who has short, curly hair.

And a penis.

“Damnit!” he whined quietly, then shook his head and forced himself to settle down. He blew out a long, calming breath, picked up the glasses, and went back over to the living room, where he found Mohinder sitting on the couch.

Mohinder stood up a little to accept the wine, then sat back down again. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome!” Ross said. He tried his hardest to make himself seem casual, but he ended up sounding spastic.

“A toast,” Mohinder suggested. “To, ah, evolutionary progress.” He winced, then said, “God, that sounded horrible.”

“No,” Ross told him as he sat next to Mohinder. “That’s perfect! To evolutionary progress, and... to new friendships.”

Mohinder nodded, smiling a little. “I’ll drink to that.”

They clinked their glasses together, and Ross downed his all at once.

Do it, he told himself as he set his empty glass down on the little table in front of him. Just - just do it.

Mohinder was just opening his mouth to say something when Ross whirled around and moved in to kiss him.

“What the -?” Mohinder cried out as he dropped his glass onto the floor and instantly jerked away from Ross, so much so that he was nearly lying halfway down across the couch.

Ross’s face was inches away from Mohinder’s, his lips puckered out and his eyes closed, when he dimly began to realize that Mohinder was not kissing him back. He opened his eyes and saw that Mohinder was staring at him in shock, and he pursed his lips slowly, drawing back from Mohinder inch by torturous inch. Mohinder remained in his position the entire time, watching Ross unblinkingly.

For a long, long moment, neither of them spoke. Ross was back in his regular sitting position on the couch, and he raised one arm out to start toying awkwardly with his empty glass. He picked it up and dangled it from the rim with two fingers.

“So,” he finally said. “I guess that’s enough wine for me, then, huh?”

He felt Mohinder’s body begin to relax next to his, though he wouldn’t dare check to see what the other man’s expression was like at that moment.

“I... I’m sorry,” Mohinder offered quietly. “I didn’t know you were... Well, you did tell me about all your ex-wives, and the whole time I had no idea why... ”

Despite his embarrassment, Ross snapped his head to his right to meet Mohinder’s gaze. “What - you think that - no, no, it’s not like that at all!” he sputtered. “I’m not like that at all!”

Mohinder kept looking at him in bewilderment. “You’re... you’re not...?”

“Gay? No!” Ross set the glass back down gently, then stood up. “Well, I was beginning to think I was, but that’s because my friends kept making fun of me when I wouldn’t shut up about you!”

Mohinder blinked. “You... told your friends about me?”

Ross sighed. “I guess I went a little overboard. Then it all caught up to me somehow, and then you and I had dinner together, and I started to wonder if I, y’know, liked you liked you, and one of my friends thought it would be a good idea to make out with you, and -” Ross stopped himself abruptly, then said, “Oh, I am so gonna kill Phoebe tomorrow.”

He heard some shifting around on the couch behind him before Mohinder asked, “Did... Did you think that I was...”

“Well, yeah!” Ross admitted, dropping his hands and turning to face Mohinder. “I mean, you asked me out to dinner, and - and said you were feeling lonely, and you paid for dinner the other night, and you kept smiling at me, and...”

Mohinder stood up from the couch, the corner of his mouth quirking up a little.

“See, you’re doing it again,” Ross said, and, to his surprise, Mohinder laughed.

“Well, I apologize for the misunderstanding, but I’m most definitely straight,” he said. Then, after a pause, he added, “At least, I’m fairly certain that I am.”

“You’ve never liked guys?” Ross asked in a small voice.

“Not to my own knowledge,” Mohinder said. His eyes flickered past Ross's head. “I should... probably go.”

“No,” Ross protested. “I’m sorry. You can stay. I promise I won’t try to kiss you again.”

Mohinder laughed once more, but he took a couple of steps toward the door. “I believe you, but I still think it would be for the best if I leave now.”

“Oh,” Ross said somberly. “Okay, then. I’ll get your jacket.”

Less than a minute later, he handed it to Mohinder, then waved off more apologies about the new stain on his floor.

“It’s no big deal. I was thinking about getting the whole place re-carpeted anyway,” he lied.

Mohinder finished putting his left arm into his jacket’s sleeve. “All the same, I’m sorry for the mess I made. In more ways than one, in fact.”

“Are you kidding? I’m surprised you didn’t end up running out of here after what I did.” Ross leaned forward to open the door for Mohinder, and he was relieved when the other man didn’t flinch at his sudden movement. “This is probably going to sound kinda weird, but would you like to meet up again later? Not right away, and definitely without any wine.”

“No wine,” Mohinder agreed warmly. “And yes, another time would be fine with me. I was still hoping to talk to you about my theories regarding future human evolution.”

“Okay,” Ross said, and now he began to smile. “That’d be great.”  He briefly considered adding, "It's a date," but then quickly squashed that idea.

“Good night," Mohinder said.

“Night!”

Mohinder walked out into the hallway and Ross watched him go, then closed his front door and leaned against it.

“Man, I have got to stop doing that!” he said.

On the following morning, Ross sat alone with Phoebe on their couch in Central Perk.

“So it turns out that Mohinder's not gay, I’m not gay, and we’re still going to hang out sometime,” he said after finishing his story of what had happened the previous night.  "In the end, it all worked out for the best.  I realized that I don't like him like that, and that no matter how much I get made fun of, there's nothing wrong with me admiring his intelligence and personality."  He fell silent for a couple of seconds, then added quietly, "Or how good he looks in a suit."

“That’s great!” Phoebe said, punching him lightly on the shoulder. “Good for you, Ross!”

“Yeah, but it was a stupid idea, trying to make out with him,” he admitted, bending over to pick up his coffee cup. “I mean, we’re both adults. I could have told him what was going on.”

Nodding, Phoebe said, “Well, yeah, that would have been a better idea. I can’t believe you actually tried to kiss him.”

With the rim of the cup inches from Ross’s mouth, he stopped and turned to glare at her. Before he could say anything, however, the others came pouring into the shop.

“Hey, Ross, how did it go last night with your lover?” Rachel asked as she plopped down on the couch next to him; meanwhile, Mike kissed Phoebe and sat on the arm of the couch on her left side.

Ross rolled his eyes. “Look, you guys, I’m not going to tell you about it, so could you please -”

“- Ross tried to make out with Mohinder, but he totally got shut down!” Phoebe announced. The others all made mock sympathetic noises, and Ross groaned as Rachel patted his leg.

“Aw, I’m sorry your boyfriend dumped you,” she said.

He turned to look at her as he raised an eyebrow. “Actually, he didn’t. See, we. Are on. A break.”

“Y’know, that just gets funnier and funnier every time you say it,” Rachel shot back at him. “And it’s too bad that things didn’t work out between you guys."  She leaned back on the couch and crossed her legs as she addressed the others.  "I mean, the man is really, really gorgeous.”

“Huh,” Joey grunted.  “I bet he’s not as pretty as me!”

“Not even close, Joe,” Ross deadpanned.

Phoebe giggled. “Ooh, that’s definitely going into my book!”

“What book?” Chandler asked her, but his question was never answered because right at that moment, the front door opened and Rachel jumped a little in her seat.

“Oh my God, it’s him!”

Mohinder walked into Central Perk, glancing around until he spotted the group. He walked over to them, nodding at everyone politely.

Even though he wanted to disappear through the couch at that moment, Ross looked up at Mohinder and said, “Oh, hello.” He turned to the others and raised the arm that wasn’t holding his mug, hoping that his friends wouldn’t embarrass him right then and there. “Everyone, this is my colleague: Doctor Mohinder Suresh. Mohinder, everyone.”

To Ross's relief, they all greeted Mohinder pleasantly. He smiled at them, then went up to Gunther so he could order a coffee to go.

Of course, throughout the whole process, everyone fell silent and watched him as he paid, waited around for a minute, then took his drink and walked by the group’s area again, bidding them all farewell as they called back to him heartily.

Once Mohinder was out of the shop, Ross managed to breathe easier again, but not by much. He waited for his friends to go right back to mocking him, but instead, Monica exclaimed, "Holy crap, is he perfect, or what?"

“See?” Rachel asked the others. “Didn’t I tell you? Didn’t I say that -”

She fell silent when she noticed that Mike, Chandler, and Joey were all staring at the door with wistful expressions on their faces.

Then they all seemed to snap out of their trances, muttering things like, “Ah, he’s nothing special,” and, “I don’t see what the big deal is.”

Ross smiled a little, and began to drink his coffee.
