Surprise Attack

For as long as he could remember, he had been taught to be aware and conscious of his surroundings; to never let his guard down; to look into the eyes of his adversary. He had become an expert at reading his opponent, which gave him the upper hand to fend off an attack, literally, before it happened.

Once in a while, though, he slipped up; and today just happened to be one of those days. As he lay in his partner’s arms, trembling, his breathing shallow and the sweat drying on his cooling body, he smiled. Sometimes surprises were good.
