On New Years Eve

New Years Eve was good. For the first time in a long time I spent New Years Eve in the White Swan in Harborne. For the first time in even longer I spent New Years Eve sober. The choice of venue was down to non-existant planning. By the time we got round to doing anything about it most places in Harborne and Sutton were sold out, which left The Swan or the Green Man. The Swan is somewhere we used to drink when we were at school so we decided to go there for auld lang syne. The sobriety was caused by a cold which left me not feeling like drinking - which coincidentally solved the problem of getting home afterwards. There were 6 of us in total - Steve and Christina, Kevin and Sarah, Ed and myself.

So The Swan has been majorly done out since the last time I was in there - it's now a non-smoking pub with a nice little exterior alcove with seating outside for those who are unable to refrain. Inside, there's wooden floors, leather chairs and nice rugs. It was pretty quiet - possibly due to its non-smokingness...the country hasn't caughton to this craze yet...which actually served our purposes very well. We had seats, the bar was easy to get served at and the staff were easy on the eye too. A stark contrast to the good old days when it was possibly the smokiest pub in the world and on New Years Eve it would be full to the rafters with merry-makers.

So yeah - much was drunk...coke and apple juice (not together) for me, strong continental lager, wine and V&T for the others. I did indulge myself in a shot of Jamesons and half a glass of champagne at midnight to usher in the New Year 'properly'. And soon, like always, it was all over. I made two journeys back to Sarah's house for the three happy couples (Ed having managed to pull) before driving myself home and crawling into bed.

going out, friends, driving, new year
