Here's my recap/review for Blood on the Scales.
In the previouslies, there was a snippet between Adama and Lee that wasn't in The Oath, and it was pure ♥.
[previously seen] Adama: Colonel and I are gonna make sure the President's raptor gets out of here safely.
[new] Lee: No, Dad, you can't stay here.
Kara: Admiral...
Adama: I'm depending on you. Make sure these animals don't dishonor this ship.
Adama and Lee hug.
I love that because it was hard to believe Lee hadn't objected to his dad's potentially suicidal mission. Plus the two of them have officially hugged more times in these two episodes than over the entire series. Not to mention the fact that if this important scene didn't make the final cut of The Oath, what other goodies will be on the DVDs? Extra-long pilots' scenes? Weeee!
Also cut was Adama's "I'll see you soon" to Roslin before the raptor left. I was so grateful when Tigh and Adama came out unscathed. I know last week's promo was made to be deceiving, which would usually piss me off, but honestly I'm just glad these two old birds are alive. That's all I care about.
And we cut right to Gaeta's stump. Which is not less gross than last week, it's more gross. Seriously, if next week we have to stare at Tigh's empty eye-socket for twenty minutes out of the episode, I'm gonna be pissed.
I love the fact that Hot Dog didn't shoot down the Prez. It's been hard enough dealing with Seelix and Racetrack and Skulls... not because fanon's elevated these characters so much, but because they've been there, seeing Starbuck and Apollo and everyone else putting their lives on the line for the fleet time and time again. So what if they make some shitty decisions? It's nice to know some peeps (other than the final three and Athena) are loyal to the Core Four and are at least willing to find out wtf is going on before shooting shit up.
Narcho, you can go diaf. And Gaeta calling himself the Galactica actual pissed me the fuck off. Mutiny or no mutiny, at least respect the Old Bucket, you douche.
I also got angry when they hit the Baseship with the missile. I might not like a few of the cylons left on that ship, but they've proved to be worthy allies time and time again.
I love how the cylons are all "they're attacking us" and Laura's all "get over yourselves. This is about me." Nice denial there about the loss of control though... three hours back as Prez and she's already back to her control-freak self. I love it.
The plan to put the basestar in the middle of the fleet is awesome. Such a military/militant decision too, so it's part Bill and part schoolteacher Laura. ♥ Like, we're not gonna shoot at you, but we'll chain ourselves to the cafeteria door so you can't do shit either .
Gaeta, not to put a damper on your little emo!rebellion, but Bill cares about the people on the ship. Too much, actually... and maybe he cares about some people more than others, and maybe he cares about one particular cylon too much, but Bill would die for almost anyone on that ship, even the lowliest of beings. Love how Bill puts the pressure on Gaeta to convince Roslin himself... it's like "hey, kid, do you remember how much Roslin used to listen to me in the mini and throughout s1? Yeah, it took forever to build a rapport, and even longer to be able to make decisions together. You want to break this fleet up, you're gonna have to start learning now."
Credits.
I commented this in my previous post, but... why doesn't the Colonial One stay permanently docked aboard the Galactica? Fuel's a scarce resource, and they could save a bunch of raptor fuel by just leaving it there. Sure, they want to preserve some idealist view of the civilian government and the military remaining separate, but everyone knows that hasn't been the case since 2.0, so whatever. It would also make writing smut way more practical (both Quorum Rep Lee/Kara and Prez/Admiral).
How nice that they can joke around while innocent people die, like Jaffee! Jerkwads. Hunkering pilots = ♥
The poor cylons in the cell. If anyone had told me back in S3 I'd be worried about the fate of the cylons, I would've laughed.
Zarek and Gaeta. Frak you both.
Chief is so awesome. Hee, they're taking away Romo's sunglasses. "But I'm not a very good shot," hee! Seriously though, there have to be more lawyers in this damn fleet than Lee and Romo. And Gaeta, stfu about justice, k? You're doing this for revenge, plain and simple. If this was about justice, this court martial wouldn't be the sham that it is. I just gagged at the visual of Adama bathing and hand-feeding Tigh. But then I giggled.
When Roslin was frantically trying to get someone via the wireless, it reminded me of my grandpa trying to operate a cellphone for the first time. Like if she shouted loud enough, the comms would work. Tory, I think the 6/8s should talk, and you and Leoben should go take a trip to the nearest airlock and vent yourselves out. Actually, mostly you, 'cause Leoben hasn't pissed me off since he decided he wasn't Kara's favorite stalker anymore.
I'll admit I was totally naive about the Zarek + Quorum scene. I mean, when they decided to grow a backbone, I figured "oh well, Zarek will ignore them, 'cause it's not like he needs them or something." I never thought it'd turn out the way it did, at least not this soon. OMG, I just realized that other than Roslin, Lee's the only surviving member of the entire cabinet. I can haz Prez Lee again soon? Anyway, Zarek's ability to bend the truth to his liking is... scary. Very, very, very scary.
It's bad enough they killed the Quorum, did they really have to ruin the furniture too? There aren't trees growing in the fleet, ffs. Nice time to start realizing what you signed up for, Gaeta.
Yay for Chief doing more chiefly things!
Is it me or the cylons (minus Tory) all kind of crush on Roslin? Everyone looked sheepish when they were admitting they'd decided to jump away. Like they didn't want to disappoint her and stuff. Aww. And, once again, fuck you, Tory. I love this Roslin speech way more than the one that comes later on. "Who do you want to be?" Exactly! They want to be part of the fleet, and she's telling them you don't just honor the alliance when you can both mutually benefit from it... you wanna be treated like humans, you start acting human, and you start by staying around and proving your worth.
Chief and Aaron's conversation made me giggle. Poor Cally, they can't help kicking her even months after her death. It's kind of hilarious that everyone talked wonders about some of the most frakked up women after they died (Cain, Kat, Kara) but the one whose bad reputation follows her forever is... tiny Cally.
I should've known as soon as I saw the pen in the scene with Romo and Adama that something good was coming... pens in this show are never a good sign.
OMG PILOTS. It's the shortest scene ever, but omg it's filled with so much love. Kara slams the dude's head in, and Lee just watches and holds his hands out for his new gun and ammo. Hee! They work so well together-- he knows how much Kara loves doing this shit, so you know he was all "no, he's all yours! you go ahead."
Godsdamn Sixes are so hot when they're not wearing the platinum blond wigs. They're all hot, but these ones are yummy. If this Six wore glasses, I'd have a new girl crush.
Another pilots scene, and omfgdsdfaesfaSkddhSKJhfs this one is so awesome. Kara, Star-frakkin'-buck, is telling Lee of all people that his plan won't work. How hot are these two together? Seriously, this ep and The Oath have been the best reminder to everyone about just how awesome and perfect for one another these two characters are. They work so well together. Kara double-wielding sidearms and shooting like eight guys at once? And Lee's plan? ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ and then we get the banter and I totally died. They're both phenomenal characters on their own, but together they make any episode so much better.
I was so excited when they made it to the brig, especially because: SAM! Confession: last week, when Lee and Kara were being totally awesome running around together, for one second I thought "THIS IS AWESOME! You know what would make it better? If Sam were there too!" I don't care if it makes me a bad shipper, I love the dynamics between these three almost as much as I love K/L. I hated the quadrangle because I never quite bought Dee's place in it all, but Sam's earned a spot in my heart. I think Lee makes Kara a better person, which is why I ship K/L, plus I always felt Sam enabled Kara's worst side (but, to be fair, I love all of Kara, bad and good, which is probably why I'll forgive her for pretty much anything, including her marriage to Sam).
Maybe things would've turned out better for Kara and Lee without Sam (we don't know for sure... maybe not), but he's there and in a crazy way he's respected Lee's place in Kara's life even when the shit hit the fan in the algae planet... and when Kara died. And when she came back. He's been there for her every time she needed him, and it's not his fault he's not what she wants... he even tried to get her to admit she wanted Lee. He wasn't like Dee, who married Lee knowing exactly how he felt for Kara... Sam was oblivious in the beginning. And, unfortunately, after the awesome Lee/Sam interactions in late S3, we've had none of it in S4, and that makes me sad. I just feel that if Sam gave Kara closure, it would make things easier for K/L to happen once and for all, which is why it's frustrated me that we haven't seen K/S since the Demetrius. With Dee, the least we saw of her the better, but with Sam I'd really like to see them calling it quits and being friends.
BTW, when Cap!Six was all "I have Hera," I screamed because YOU DO NOT GIVE THE CRAZY CYLON THE PROPHETIC BABY. It's bad enough she's got one in her belly, ffs. (even if Cap!Six's baby bump made me go "awwww")
I was not expecting Sam to get shot. At all. It broke my heart into tiny tiny tiny pieces. Kara shouting his name and her desperation... it was crazy. Then Lee shouting Kara's name, and when he realizes Sam's hurt, he's all caring and OMG I LOVE THESE THREE SO FRAKKIN' MUCH! Seriously, how awesome is Lee for not being an asshole and going "frak him, leave him down here! he's just a machine" or something else stupid. From last episode we know Lee still doesn't like the cylons, he hasn't forgiven them, but if Kara and the Old Man trust them, he's willing to give them a shot and honor the amnesty he declared. It's so much love. And then Kara tells Lee to go save Bill, and my heart broke even more. There's so much love in this scene, and only a tiny bit is my own.
(Six is supporting Helo, carrying Hera and she's pregnant? I sure hope cylon pregnancies are more resilient than humans) And poor Kara. She's so damn lost.
Frak Zarek. Frak him to death. Lying to Bill about poor Saul. Gaeta gains ten points for saying he's sorry, but he's still at about eight thousand negative points, so whatever.
Yay for Leoben being useful! I just hope he doesn't start to, you know, stalk the Prez. Bill would not like that shit.
OMG Kara dragging Sam on her own. *cries* She loves him, and while I think she's a better match with Lee, it doesn't change the fact that she's hurting so much seeing someone she loves dying. Romo's "penmanship" was awesome. I totally yelled at him for even considering leaving Kara there alone with Sam, but then he finally realized that you do not say no to Starbuck, and came back.... which, I'll admit, I enjoyed Romo's character before, but I was never on his bandwagon until this moment. ROMO RULES! Hee, I just saw he got his sunglasses back. Win.
Yay for Kelly falling out of the rebellious conga line. When he was about to shoot himself, though, I got pissed... we've had enough suicides in the fleet, tyvm-- please stop. Maybe they need to start putting happy pills in the algae mix, 'cause these people have issues. Lee being all hands-on and shutting lights off and stuff was total awesomeness. SO HOT. I'd missed Apollo, the guy who gave Kara the camera gear in Pegasus and told her to go rogue.... that part of Lee had been dormant far too long. Plus I love the fact that Lee's hanging out with Tigh and Athena as he's kicking ass, because that exemplifies what the fleet's gotta be doing atm instead of going nuts-- put your differences aside, and work together. There'll be time for courts martial and revolutions later.
Adama's PSYCH!execution scared me. I'm usually weary of such plot devices, but I fell for almost every one in this episode... this show's seriously frakked with my brain. And Baltar... getting laid in the middle of it all. Even more unsettling is Baltar turning down more sex. This Six is soooo purty. Baltar: "Then cut off my legs." Yes, because that's working out well for Gaeta... maybe you need to check out his stump again? Aww, he loves his crazy cult.
Hee, when Gaeta orders the execution and then we cut to Tigh holding the gun? YAY! And then Lee and Bill hug (AGAIN!) To all of the peeps who're still with the "all cylons are the same and we must hate all of them", frak you all. Some of these guys have earned the fleet's trust, some are earning it right now, risking their lives for the safety of everyone, including your sorry human asses.
Roslin's conversation with Zarek is... disturbing. He's such a creepy motherfucker. His democracy-happy propaganda is so hypocritical, 'cause his big beef is the fact that Roslin and Adama (and Lee) killed democracy with the honoring of the alliance, but his problem is with authority in general, because he's an anarchist son of a bitch. And if there's one thing worse than a military dictatorship or the illusion of democracy, is anarchy. I'd take Roslin and Adama's lies over Zarek's truths any day.
Hee, I love how Adama gets this huge following on his way to the CIC.
Gaeta, thank you for redeeming yourself (somewhat) by standing up to Zarek.
Hee, Bill's communication with the Prez is all official and epic like, which is awesome because I was totally expecting him to go all "Hey honey, it's me. I'm alive. Remember how you promised supper? Well, I'm waiting."
The engine of Galactica looks very... sexual. And wtf is up with the fissure? Noooo! I need my Galactica to be in one piece, ffs. I knew they shouldn't have fucked up the Pegasus. Also, the "scars" on the Galactica looked creepy, like a giant bear just clawed the shit out of it.
Okay, I love Bill and Laura and all, but did we really need another scene between them? I would've preferred seeing what was the status on Sam.
Gaeta's scene with Baltar was heartbreaking. I kept expecting the shot to go wide on Gaeta to reveal that it was a Chip!Baltar or something, but... it didn't. Baltar's character was redeemed more in the past two episodes than ever (even more than with Gina).
I'm still unsure of how I feel about the execution. It's not even my personal views about the death penalty, because I make exceptions to my personal ideologies for this show (i.e. Roslin's ban on abortions), but I just felt they were being hypocrites when they decided to carry out the executions. But then again, Tom Zarek is a dangerous man-- you can't afford to have him alive, because he'd be pulling the same shit again in a few months... even if you put him in the brig for all eternity, he'd find a way to start yet another revolution soon. The look Gaeta and Zarek affected me, but I'm still not too sure what to make of it... one way it can be seen is that they knew they were right, and they felt they did with the truth on their side. But mostly, I think Zarek was fine with dying like that because in a way, it was long overdue. It proved him right, that the government and the military were this crazy and scary body who'll kill anyone who speaks up against it.
I'm pissed we didn't find out what happened to Sam. WTF? Please, please don't let him die. Not just because I totally ♥ Sam, but also because I don't want Kara to spend the next gods know how many episodes grieving and hating herself... that'll not be conducive to Kara/Lee make-out sessions, godsdamnit.
Overall, I thought this was a very good episode... not as good as last week's, but that would've been very hard to top.
