hate mail

Tomorrow I will return home and drop by the office to check my mail and faxes.  Of course I can check my email and voice mail on the road, but mail and faxes are still low tech things that sit there waiting for me in person.

Mail is fine, it's usually either neutral or good.  Checks come in the mail.  Checks are good.

But the fax machine - that is what other lawyers use when they want to send me some hate.  I dread the whirring sound of my fax machine firing up.  It means some lawyer is feeling some hate for me.

One day I told another lawyer in my building that I was relieved that 5:00 pm Friday had rolled around and no hate mail had come over the fax all day.  She replied, "well, you must not have done anything.  If you are doing your job, you're going to get hate mail."

I'd get rid of the fax machine except that I am required to have one, as a litigator.  The only people who send me faxes are other lawyers, when they want to spew some hate mail at me.  So I spend $50 a month, plus paper and toner, just so other lawyers can get instant gratification when they want to do some hating.

I'd prefer that they have to buy a stamp and use the U.S. Postal Service for hate mail, but I'm required to make myself available for hating via fax.
