This evening, on the telephone:
STEVEN'S MOTHER: I need your help with my crossword.
STEVEN: [jokingly] Chris isn't here, I'm afraid.
STEVEN'S MOTHER: [clearly disappointed] Oh. You'll have to do then.
I worry that I'm heading for one of those unnerving situations where you suspect your parents like your boyfriend more than they like you.
