Obligatory Gossip Girl post

Wow, it has been a long wait for new episodes, to the extent that during the recap at the top of this one, I wasn't entirely sure if I was seeing scenes from the previous episode, the beginning of this season, or the entire damn series. Still, it's good to have it back.

The Nate/Serena plotline was kind of tired, but at the same time, I felt like it worked for the two of them and their previous problems with relationships. The idea of Nate going to Dan for advice on how to date Serena was hilarious, because obviously, taking his own advice worked so well for Dan, didn't it? And Blair, as usual, offered disturbing but not entirely useless advice. Actually it was nice to have quite a few Blair/Serena scenes in this episode - I really think the friendships in this show don't get enough screentime, and theirs is the most fascinating one by far, so their scenes at home and at the ambassador's party were very welcome. Similarly, Blair's support of Chuck was a nice touch at the end, after some very Blair harping on about a pointless socialite, she comes through when it counts. I like that they haven't completely eliminated her silliness and shallowness, but they've given her enough maturity to be able to put those traits to one side when she realises that she must. I'm not crazy about the "Chuck's mom is alive" storyline, but we'll see where they take it.

Jenny's drug mule plotline continues. I guess the whole "bored, spoiled rich kid" storyline works for her now, but she's such a different character from the one she started out as that it really is quite jarring at times. I think the main reason for my sticking with this storyline is that I find Kevin Zegers very watchable, but I just wonder where they're going with it, or even if the writers have thought that far ahead.

Dan apparently has nothing to do, which is fine by me, even if he has been more tolerable this season. And no Vanessa, which probably pleased a lot of people.

Also, since it is written in the charter of this show that at least one Humphrey male must behave like an ass at all times, Rufus was wearing the mantel admirably tonight. Sheesh. Fine, okay, so Lily lied to you, but not giving her the opportunity to explain herself is so fucking juvenile, as is deciding that you're going to assert your moral high ground by doing a little cheating of your own. God, he sucks so much.
