RMT & Trains - what a mess!

Apr 02, 2010 13:46

Great, the proposed rail strike next week is off.

However, it appears that the rail companies may be trying to cash in on this. Either that, or their normal ticket sales are corrupt and unfair:
I'm trying to get a ticket from Bath to Richmond (London) on Thursday afternoon. This, I'm told, can't be done for less than £41.80. However, a walk-on ticket from Bath to Reading (the expected change) is £20 and a walk-on ticket from there to Richmond is £11.50.
Go figure.

It amuses me, though, that in this democratic day and age, we can still see things like this...
In the RMT ballot for the aforementioned strike:
  • 26 signal boxes were not balloted;
  • in 67 ballot locations the number of cast votes exceeded the number of RMT members;
  • 11 non-existant locations were returned...
    Of this, the TUC General Secretary can be quoted as moaning "It is becoming increasingly easy for employers, unhappy at the prospect of a dispute, to rely on the courts to intervene and nullify a democratic ballot for industrial action on a mere technicality".

    Long Live Democracy!
