Surely self awareness in animals has been observed for decades using the mirror test?
No doubt the article leaves plenty of the full paper's nuance out for a good headline. Poor show Independent. Poor show.

You beat me to it! :o)

Sense of self in other species is not new research at all but has been ongoing for decades.

Anyone who has ever known a cat knows animals can have a strong self awareness.

You mis-spelt "utter disdain for the entirety of humanity" ;)

As to the private school thing.

Obivously they were looking at the UK, but I can say that for me having gone to a private university, Bard, opened up a lot of doors to me that would have been much harder to open then if i had went to a public university.

There are certain schools that hiring managers hold in high regard (particularly when it comes to getting creative jobs) and that gives you a huge leg up.

Also the quality of education is better. I never had a class size at university larger than five. Just try to have not done the homework in that situation because you will be shamed. Plus we had actual professors teaching us at undergraduate level instead of teaching assistants and that makes a huge difference as well.

Louise has commented that in Edinburgh, instead of the standard Glasgow question of "Which team do you support?", people ask what school you went to, because your social class will often be assumed based on the answer.

Same thing in large parts of America.

I'm not bragging about this - just saying this is the way it is.

"Which team do you support?"

That's a question that'd get a blank look in response from me.
