As to the private school thing.

Obivously they were looking at the UK, but I can say that for me having gone to a private university, Bard, opened up a lot of doors to me that would have been much harder to open then if i had went to a public university.

There are certain schools that hiring managers hold in high regard (particularly when it comes to getting creative jobs) and that gives you a huge leg up.

Also the quality of education is better. I never had a class size at university larger than five. Just try to have not done the homework in that situation because you will be shamed. Plus we had actual professors teaching us at undergraduate level instead of teaching assistants and that makes a huge difference as well.

Louise has commented that in Edinburgh, instead of the standard Glasgow question of "Which team do you support?", people ask what school you went to, because your social class will often be assumed based on the answer.

Same thing in large parts of America.

I'm not bragging about this - just saying this is the way it is.

"Which team do you support?"

That's a question that'd get a blank look in response from me.

Depending on the location and context in which you're being asked, the answer can be quite important. The meaning of the question can range from what it sounds like it's asking, to being a query on your religion, or simply whether you belong wherever it is that you are (possibly with a veiled or not-so-veiled threat if your answer isn't the right one)

Sometimes it's just about football though.

I have a button reading "No, but I read the book." It's intended as a wry comment on crappy movies made from great fantasy novels, but I find it also useful to point to if anyone asks, "Are you a Christian?" because that's my answer: No, but I read the book.
