Not the review you're looking for

I love Neil Gaiman. I love Doctor Who. I really, really wanted to love this episode. I saw there were lots of reviews on my flist, which boded well, and I was looking forward to it and I so wanted to love it. But I couldn't.

I don't know. I can't put my finger on what exactly I didn't like about it. I'm very conscious that I'm an old school Who fan and I live with the most doggedly old school of old school Who fans and I'm determined not to react like a stereotypical old school Who fan. And I really really wanted to love this. But I just couldn't.

One thing I can put my finger on; I didn't like the woman who played Idris/Sexy. I couldn't understand half of what she was saying and I thought she was a bit... cliche. It's as if they took the things about Neil Gaiman that I'm a wee bit tired of (quirky patchwork romantic costumes, names like Auntie and Uncle and The Corsair, mad girls who say mad quirky things with just a touch of wisdom/foresight) and wrote a parody of Neil Gaiman.

About the only thing I really did love was when the Doctor opened the cupboard and found the collection of distress cubes. Also Matt Smith's wibblechin.

I feel very much like a flat balloon now.
