It's book release day and THE FUTURE FALLS, book three of the Emporium series, is now available in hardcover and ebook at -- hopefully but I have zero control over this -- all the usual places. Yay!
But while some people are happily heading off to pick up book three in a series where they've already enjoyed books one and two, others are frowning and muttering, "I know not of this Emporium series of which you speak!" (What? People don't mutter like that? You sure? Okay, just me then...)
Two things to remember going in:
1. The Gales are not always "nice". Everything the antagonist says about them in the first book is essentially true. To be fair, everything the Gales say about the antagonist is also essentially true.
2. The Future Falls is the LAST Emporium book. At this point in time, I have no plans to write another. Maybe some short stories. No more novels. Although, I'm not dead yet and plans can change. But they probably won't.
So, cheat sheets. Using slightly edited cover copy because there's really no need to start from scratch and thus explaining my use of the word cheat.
This is book one.
The Gales of southern Ontario can change the world with the charms they cast, and they prefer to keep their power safely confined within the family. Dark-eyed and dangerous, the Gale Aunties maintain order with the weight of tradition. And pie. Alysha, like all her cousins, often finds herself beset by Aunties trying to run her life so when a letter from her missing Gran arrives telling her that she’s inherited a junk shop in Calgary, Alysha is ready and willing to honor her grandmother’s last request to keep the shop open and serve “the community.” The Aunties, of course, want her to find out what really happened to Gran and come right back home, where they have her future mapped out for her. It isn’t until she arrives in Calgary that Alysha realizes The Enchantment Emporium serves more than one community - and that one person’s junk may be another person’s magical treasure. Finding out what happened to Gran won't be easy, especially when Alysha discovers the otherwordly trouble brewing in Calgary includes leprechauns, tabloid reporters, and high caliber weapons. Even calling in family reinforcements may not be enough to save the day….
This is book two.
Now that Allie has settled down with her own Circle in Calgary, the Aunties are focusing their considerable attention on Charlie - who'd prefer they leave her alone. She has a steady job with a country and western band and a stable homelife with regular pie... but the truth is, Charlie Gale is a Wild Power and there's nothing Wild about the life she's living. When the universe shoves her in the direction of a Celtic Rock band on the summer festival circuit, she ditches stability and heads for the east coast to play music and have a good time. She has no plans to get involved in the fight an extended family of Selkies are waging against offshore oil drilling until the oil company employs horrific means to get what they want -- they hire a Gale Auntie. Auntie Catherine. Allie's grandmother. Another Wild Power. To have any hope of winning, Charlie will have to learn what born to be Wild means in the Gale family -- then teach it to Jack, a Dragon Prince trying to be a real boy -- all while attempting corporate espionage with a seal-wife who won't stop crying.
This is book three.
When Auntie Catherine warns Charlotte "Charlie" Gale of an approaching asteroid, Charlie's hesitant about passing the warning along. Auntie Catherine isn't always the most reliable of sources. But when NASA and Doomsday Dan confirm Auntie Catherine's prediction, Charlie turns to the family for help in a desperate attempt to keep humans from going the way of the dinosaurs.
But Allie is unavailable because the universe seems determined to have her produce the seventh son of a seventh son of a seventh son of a Gale. And the Aunties can't help because they're tied to the earth. And in the end, all Charlie has is a guitar...
...and Jack. The Dragon Prince. And Sorcerer.
But Charlie might like Jack just a little too much, and Jack might like Charlie a little too much in return. Actually, between Allie's hormones, the Aunties trying to force her and Jack into ritual, the Courts having way too much fun at the end of days, and Jack's sudden desire to sacrifice himself for the good of the many, Charlie's fairly certain that the asteroid is the least of her problems.
The Gales are going to need more than pie to save the world from an incoming asteroid. But standing together, there isn't anything the family can't deal with - except possibly each other.
