A computer, a liver, and a visa card walk into a bar...

So a few weeks ago, my desktop flashed me the blue screen of death.  I did a reset and sort of got it back but not really because suddenly weird things were happening, although VISTA had loaded and was working.  ISH.  Anyway, beyond my pay grade so I took it into Staples which is pretty much our only resourse as far as tech support goes given where I live.  They kept it for a week.

I'm working on my netbook.  I love my netbook.  But it's LITTLE.

I called.  Then at nine days I called again and got a little shirty.  Not a problem he said, I'm running the last thing now, by the time you get here, it'll be ready to go."

I drive for an hour.  I wait for an hour. I don't buy new tech. (it's me in a Staples, this isn't a given)  It's not booting.  Security pack two won't load.  There's corrupted code.

"Do I have to scrub and reinstall Vista?" I ask.

"No.  I can work around it," he says. I hand him my external hard drive and ask him to do a full data back up just in case.  But I really don't want to lose my bookmarks and archived outlook emails.  (don't tell me there's a way to say them, seriously, don't)(don't tell me
This is good.  I drive for an hour and go home.

I come in the next day, which is a Friday.  Late the next day.  Which is still a Friday. (this is important)  He hands me my desktop and says, "It takes about thirty seconds to boot but otherwise, it's fine."

I get home and guess what doesn't boot?  But he's gone for the day.  And won't be in on the weekend.  I sigh. (in this instance the word sigh may be interpretted as I swear a lot and scare the dogs)   So I drag out my old desktop which can't be hooked up to the internet -- still using the netbook for that -- but does give me the bigger screen and keyboard to write on.

Monday, I go in for a three hour minor bit of day surgery and leave the hospital just before noon on Wednesday.  My liver enzimes went up.  Then they went down.  I'm fine.

Wednesday afternoon I talk to tech support at Staples and he says, "It booted here."  And I'm polite and send the beloved off on an hour drive so he can scrub it and reinstall Vista.  Yes, I thought about installing Seven.  I'm waiting for Nine.  Just because.

Friday, the beloved takes my keys into town with her so I can't do the grocery shopping and Saturday I brave pre-Thanksgiving crowds (Canadian remember, by the end of November we're not so much thankful as hunkered down) and Sunday I pack for Germany and Monday I cook a turkey and all that's fine because I'm still making my word count..

Today as I do the final packing for Germany, I realize I haven't seen my VISA card since Saturday when I bought gas.  I search.   I make many phone calls.  I sigh alot (see previous definition of sigh) I get things fixed.

Then I get in the car to get to the train to go to the bus which will take me to the plane in order to fly to Germany.

Three things have now gone to hell.  I have paid my dues to the gods.

I'm expecting to clear security with no problem, to get a seat next to a person who won't chat at me, to have my luggage arrive with me, and to have a wonderful time at RIngCon.

Actually, I was expecting to have a wonderful time at RIngCon regardless.

I have no idea if I'll be able to get on line again before next Tuesday so be good and keep an eye on the beloved for me.  (fionapatton  or the DKJohnston twitter account)
