I've been working my head around this, Fran, and I think I've finally stumbled over the answer. Consider that the System Manager somehow knows everything we've said or done, and then, that those helpful little hand-helds of ours have both cameras and microphones. Suppose that he was tapping into them. If we disable them, perhaps...
But we could only disable the out feed, if we disabled in the in feed it would be impossible to receive video or sound. The only logical way to go about it would be a way to let us re-enable it should we need it for some sort of distress call.
We had already set out to tinker with them anyway, at least it will give us a goal.

Call it appealing if you'd like, but I'm not in the mood for this mistletoe which plagues us. An entertaining concept, given different circumstances but it seems quite out of place in this one.
