I watched the Wonder Woman movie today. My review + spoilers ahead:
- Did you sit through that godawful Batman VS Superman ? Do you remember thinking "I really hope Diana Prince / Wonder Woman gets a better franchise than this. Please don't screw her / us over" ? Yeah, nobody listened to us women apparently. Prepare to get your heart broken.
-This movie reduces Diana to some tropes discussed on the Feminist Frequency Youtube channel: Glorified door opener, "sexualized slot machine tossing you the occasional coin" & "(him) busting her out of captivity while she busts out of her corset."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BrKqEtG-2w-The 2017 version of Wonder Woman isn't truly about Diana Prince. It's about World War I spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). Everything in this movie is centered around what other people can do or want to do to / for Steve Trevor. Poor Diana is just a stepping stone for "Hey, who wants to see a Steve focused franchise ? Chris might get naked in future movies, too!" If you don't know who Steve Trevor is, go read this wiki page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Trevor-Steve's three spy helpers (Chief, Sameer & Scotsman Charlie) are all glorified door openers, too. Two of them are minorities. Dude, it's 2017 & we're still using "Tonto helps the Lone Ranger" ? Fucking disgraceful.
- Part of the story revolves around an evil German scientist named Dr. Maru (a woman with a disfigured face). She is trying to create toxic gases that disfigure, melt, burn & suffocate World War I soldiers. The gases are also unleashed on villages with women & children, killing everyone instantly. Dr. Maru's final scene ends with Diana chickening out & letting her just run away. I guess the point was "I can excuse baby killing, but I draw the line at not supporting other women" ?! Just really bizarre.
-What really pissed me off: Diana doesn't truly come into her powers until she sees Steve die. Then she acts like "Bitch, you killed mah man! I'm gonna go full Amazon on your ass." She later strokes Steve's photo on a memorial collage & blathers about "And now I know... that only love can truly save the world. So now I stay, I fight, and I give - for the world I know can be. This is my mission now. Forever." The movie begins with Bruce Wayne / Batman sending her a World War I photo of herself, Steve, Charlie, The Chief & Sameer. The movie ends with Diana sending a thank you email to Bruce for sending the picture. Again, it's all about the men! Can we have ONE story that doesn't involve "This woman got her powers / anger due to a broken heart, rape or a child's death" ? (To clarify: there's no rape in this movie & Diana does not lose a child or get pregnant).
- What I would've done differently: Left out the stupid World War I storyline. No Chris Pine at all. The three sidekicks would've been females.
- The showing I sat in was pretty packed. But the audience reaction was dead quiet. Some smart ass sarcastically clapped at the end. That's it. Not good!
- Look, I get this movie was supposed to be about "It's directed by a woman, is a female focused franchise & inspires little girls." But Wonder Woman fell so short of that it's embarrassing. We woman got royally screwed out of a really great franchise.
