If anyone is looking for a really well-made movie that is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming (as my friend Amie said, it made her laugh and made her cry... literally), go see 'Bella.' It's an independent film, the first from a new Mexican directer. It's in both English and Spanish, since the romance is between a white American woman and a Mexican/Puerto Rican man who work together in New York and both go through some tough times. I went to the movie mostly because it was a night out with my girlfriend, but it ended up being amazing...
Speaking of good movies that deal with pregnancy (Bella has that thrown in the mix too), there's a free screening of Juno coming up in a week and a half. Made by the makers of "Thank You for Smoking" and hailed as this year's "Little Miss Sunshine," it looks really fun and I need to find out how to get into the free screening so I don't have to wait for the official release in December. The whole story revolves around a high school girl, Juno, getting pregnant and carrying the baby to term.
I feel like half the things I've seen or done lately have had to deal with pregnancy, though I'm too tired to remember what they all were... Oh wait, that's right, I went to my first meeting for VOX (Voices for Planned Parenthood) last Monday, and visited other members on Library Walk while they passed out free Halloween condoms last week. Next meeting we'll be planning for a visit from a radical anti-choice group (yah, they're radical enough I wouldn't even label them as pro-life). We're planning to put on a counter protest, providing information, statistics and condoms (of course :P). This group apparently uses a lot of false figures to demonize abortion, so we'll be prepping posters pointing out the mistakes and false information. That should be interesting. Later on, we'll be making visits to pharmacies in the area to check on the availability, price, and ease of access to Plan B. Apparently some pharmacists are really rude or mean about it, and we want to try and fix that, or at least expose it.
Oh, and now I'm having babies with my friends on facebook... most notably with Tyler, since he managed to father my first child, who is doing quite well. Little Darth Vader (Tyler named him, not me) managed to get dark skin and black hair with a blue stripe, despite the pale complections of his parents... but that's because he's just that cool.
In any case, I think I'm getting a little overwhelmed by the amount of pregnancy references in my life. 'Bella' was amazing, 'Juno' should be great, and I'm really excited about participating in VOX, but I'm not sure how much more pregnancy I can handle... D:
