I'm still kind of sick and tired, just enough to feel blah, but not enough to stay at home. I really don't feel much like working, so what's better for procrastination than memes? I got tagged so why the hell not?

1) archaeology: I've always been interested in the past. I'm not sure how that came about. Could be all the costumed Chinese soaps I saw as a kid. Or the Maya numerals I learned in middle school in Costa Rica. But regardless, I'm always fascinated by how similar and how different people were hundreds and thousands of years ago. History only tells us a small, sometimes skewed, piece of our past, so the other way is to use materials left behind by ancient people to reconstruct their story. Seeing their cool artifacts is one thing, but getting into their heads is far more a trip.
2) marriage: While some of the language around vows themselves I can give or take (such as "obey"), I do believe that marriage is about commitment. It's a personal choice to enter into a corporate unit of two humans. Love should ideally be the initiator, but if you ask yourself if you can share your life with another for the rest of your life, love is not enough of a catalyst. Communication, patience, understanding, compassion, humor, good sex, and mutual respect are important factors. Marriage is a state of mind, although the piece of paper is important too. Humans are creatures of ritual and the formal recognition of marriage by family and peers is essential to the human experience. And on top, formal recognition by the government obviously facilitate many things, not the least the Pursuit of Happiness. As such, no couples married in their hearts should be denied the right to be recognized as married in a court of law.
3) autistic spectrum: This could be controversial. Autism is a barrier. Alex is a bright, happy kid. He has issues to prevent full expression and communication of his thoughts. But at the same time, he's also incredibly adapt at computers and mechanical things. Humans are constantly evolving, even if we think we're not. In the past several decades, people who might have very minor autistic tendencies (such as my wife, me, and lots of geeks) and might not have gotten together have been able to hook up thanks to technology as well as social changes, and are having kids now that have higher penchant for autism. Perhaps it's Nature's joke on us, but perhaps the human species is going through a sort of bottleneck evolution, and autism might be a trait that arises originally out of a defect but could also take us down another path of evolution.
4) cooking: It's actually a relaxing thing for me. I've always like good food, mostly because my parents like good food and took us to good places. Now I love the process of prepping and cooking. It allows me to be creative but also satisfies the ancient urge of working with your hands. Plus it's instant (or nearly so) gratification as you can see your success (or failure) pretty quickly.
5) technology: Love it. Hate it. I'm never an early adopter for some reason. I guess I'm just a bit cheap. I also hate gadgets. I remember back in the early 2000's I had a cell phone, a MP3 player, and a PDA, and I hated it. When the iPhone came out I actually really wanted it, but my slightly frugal nature has been preventing me from getting one. I like to understand how technology works, so I'm particularly annoyed when it doesnt work.
