Oscar goes here!

Feb 04, 2010 01:21

It's that time again! Oscar nominations were announced today. This year, there are TEN best picture nominations, as opposed to the usual 5. When this was first announced, it seemed extremely gimmicky, and I figured the nominations would just end up being taken up by 10 indie flicks no one has seen or gives a shit about. But I was proven wrong! The nominations include the requisite indie no one has ever heard of, the obligatory Coen brothers movie, the one movie that has no reason being there compared to other movies that didn't get nominated, and some real honest to goodness crowd pleasers! Movies that actually deserve a nomination! Here are the nominees:

Best Picture:

Avatar
The Blind Side
An Education
A Serious Man
The Hurt Locker
District 9
Up In The Air
Precious
Up
Inglorious Basterds

Best director:

Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker
James Cameron - Avatar
Jason Reitman - Up In The Air
Lee Daniels - Precious
Quentin Tarantino - Inglorious Basterds

Best Actor:

Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart
George Clooney - Up In The Air
Morgan Freeman - Invictus
Colin Firth - A Single Man
Jeremy Renner - The Hurt Locker

Best Actress:

Meryl Streep - Julie and Julia
Helen Mirren - The Last Station
Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side
Gabourey Sidibe - Precious
Carey Mulligan - An Education

Best Supporting Actor:

Matt Damon - Invictus
Christoph Waltz - Inglorious Basterds
Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones
Woody Harrelson - The Messenger
Christopher Plummer - The Last Station

Best Supporting Actress:

Penelope Cruz - Nine
Maggie Gyllenhaal - Crazy Heart
Anna Kendrick - Up In The Air
Mo'Nique - Precious
Vera Farmiga - Up In The Air

So there you have it! Not a bad selection, except what the hell is The Blind Side doing there? Really? The Blind Side? I expected Bullock to get nominated but not the movie itself! Where the hell is STAR TREK? A movie that got FAR more accolades and FAR better reviews. Sorry, but Trek should have gotten that nomination. That was this years major snub. At least, the surprise nomination of those fookin prawns in DISTRICT 9 almost makes up for it. I NEVER would have guessed that movie would earn a nomination. That was a great surprise. As of now, it looks like Avatar and The Hurt Locker are the two leads to earn the prize for picture and director. It's almost a toss up. There are some films on there I still want to see. I'll probably see Precious. My sister wants to see it, it's on our netflix. So I'll just take advantage and check it out. Up In the Air I really want see. Don't care much about the Coen brothers movie(A Serious Man) and I don't even know what the hell An Education is, and since it took Star Trek's spot, I will snub The Blind Side and not see it. The rest of the movies I saw, and I love each of them. Hell I even own them on blu-ray.

As time approaches, I'll make another post with my official predictions for the Oscars. We'll see how accurate I am at guessing them. For now, look over the nominees, see what you think will win, and what you think SHOULD win.
