Avatar - A+

What on earth do I possibly say about Avatar? I think this movie is seriously beyond description. It's been over a decade since James Cameron directed a film, but you'd think it's been a year. The man hasn't lost a beat. He is still the ground breaking genius he was 10 years ago. In fact, with Avatar, he proves he is more so. Avatar is nothing short of ground breaking. The film doesn't just find a new innovative way to use motion capture technology, but it makes CG effects look so completely real, so stunning, it truly marks a first step into the future of film. No trailer, no clip, no words can even come to describing what you see in the film. You seriously just MUST see it to believe it. The film reeks of an infinite amount of imagination, but nothing obnoxious, or stuffed in for the sake of showing off. The true strength of Cameron is that he knows he is breaking ground, but he does it in a simplistic enough fashion where the work can speak for itself.

Technology aside, the film still stunning. The story is familiar. Outsider gets stuck studying a new world, falls in love with said worlds, and leads its people to defense against crazy people wanting to ruin it for selfish gain. Cameron uses this familiar story as a backdrop to the technology. The trade off is you get a timeless tale told in an entirely new way. The result of just amazing. There are things you see in this film that defy imagination. It is nothing short of a beautiful film, and it HAS to be seen in a theater. Avatar is the thunderous return of James Cameron, and it's a close to a decade in film, marking a new step forward for technology in film. It is not only the best film of 2009, but it is one of the best films released in the past 10 years. A true masterpiece.
