I'm through with making excuses for the Sam characterization. At the moment I am drunk and profane, but I am not sure I will be any more charitable sober.
I am using all the moral energy I have not hating righteous!Dean.
You're annoyed with Dean? That's interesting. The general consensus (based on the quick scan I'm doing of various journals and boards) seems to be that Sam is the douche (Which I don't agree with, by the way--clearly something is going on with the guy. For that reason, he gets a pass on his behavior till we understand its cause--at least from me!). Dean is getting sympathy because Cas didn't give him much love.
What's bugging you, sweetie? Or are you annoyed by the previews--particularly the Veritas ep I want to see NOW?
I was actually really surprised to see that tonight. I mean OBVIOUSLY something is wrong. Sam isn't having a bad day, part of him is missing or injured somehow. Yet I read some posting on SPN's ONTD and folks were definitely not happy with him.
To me that's like hating on a sick person because they're inconveniencing you. It's not anything he can help. I'm convinced of that. And I'm pretty danged certain that's what Dean is going to discover during the Veritas ep.
Hey, An...enjoyed your thoughts, as always. I was kind of afraid to post mine. I had my typically rambling, mostly positive, slightly sophomoric post all ready to go when I skimmed the reviews and realized I was supposed to be outraged by the hooker thing. I just thought it was kind of amusing. Ooops. Maybe I'm too shallow for this show.
I do think there is a lot yet to be revealed about whatever has changed Sam. I'm confident there's an explanation. What I'm nervous about is whether its something they can go back from. Like you, I find the vertias idea intriguing.
And yeah, like you, the angels-only stuff has got to go. I pretty much liked the first half of the ep and was less enthusiastic about the latter half.
On to next week...looking forward to seeing Jensen's directorial debut. =)
The hooker was only there to highlight yet again how different Sam is. Dean is dreaming about a home he had to leave behind and Sam is paying for sex. It's supposed to be a character revealing moment, so I don't have any issue with it.
I think you bring up a good point about whether they can go back from something as bad as hell--that's the whole problem with taking your character to that extreme. Let's face it, pretty much any human being besides Dean Winchester would be a hollowed out shell after his 40 years in hell. His reactions once freed, while touching as acted by JA, are kind of unrealistic. I don't know where they're going to go with Sam's hell visit. But I'm willing to suspend disbelief as to its aftermath. It's Supernatural, after all. ;-)
Oh yes...if you're not willing to suspend disbelief, this is not the show for you. Fortunately, I don't usually have too much trouble there.
I'm just really hoping there's a point coming up this season...hopefully soon...where we can look back on these first few eps and go... "Okay, NOW that makes sense."
I'm a little scared of the vertias episode, but also SO excited for it. Forcing your brother to tell the truth about things he might have a right to keep secret is not a good thing to do. It could backfire in so many ways. *bites nails*
I'm sure it will backfire. With those clips we saw, I'm just about positive that Dean saying to Sam: "You'll always have my back, won't you, Sam" comes early in the ep when he has grave doubts about his bro. But when he tells Bobby there's something with Sam, he sounds devastated. I'm sure he not only learns something he doesn't want to know, but it's something that is going to cast Sam's behavior in a whole new light.
