I'm through with making excuses for the Sam characterization. At the moment I am drunk and profane, but I am not sure I will be any more charitable sober.
I am using all the moral energy I have not hating righteous!Dean.
You're annoyed with Dean? That's interesting. The general consensus (based on the quick scan I'm doing of various journals and boards) seems to be that Sam is the douche (Which I don't agree with, by the way--clearly something is going on with the guy. For that reason, he gets a pass on his behavior till we understand its cause--at least from me!). Dean is getting sympathy because Cas didn't give him much love.
What's bugging you, sweetie? Or are you annoyed by the previews--particularly the Veritas ep I want to see NOW?
I was actually really surprised to see that tonight. I mean OBVIOUSLY something is wrong. Sam isn't having a bad day, part of him is missing or injured somehow. Yet I read some posting on SPN's ONTD and folks were definitely not happy with him.
To me that's like hating on a sick person because they're inconveniencing you. It's not anything he can help. I'm convinced of that. And I'm pretty danged certain that's what Dean is going to discover during the Veritas ep.
Thank for this! I finally was able to watch the episode and fully agree that something is very wrong with our boy. Dean is obviously the POV we're supposed to be tracking with, and his sidelong glance at Sam when the angel mentioned souls being a valuable commodity was telling.
I have a feeling we won't learn much until the Veritas episode.
I so hope we're right on this! I do not want this to be permanent...
Yeah, we're definitely supposed to view Sam's behavior as the big mystery (at least for the first part of the season). I think you're smart to note an angel mentioning the value of souls. Because, obviously, if Sam lost his soul in hell or exchanged it for his freedom, he would have given it to an angel (Michael presumably). And you'd have to wonder what an angel would do with it.
I absolutely think we're right about this and I also absolutely believe it won't be permanent. However, I have a feeling the big arc this season will be about getting Sam's soul back. If that's the case, this version of Sam is going to be with us for awhile.

Do you think this would be redundant with the whole "Bobby also has an endangered soul" arc?
From what I'd read of spoilers for Weekend at Bobby's, I thought it sounded as if Bobby was going to resolve that situation with Crowley. It doesn't seem that Jim is going to be in as many eps this year. So I don't think the arc is going to be as important as all that.
My boy was AWESOME! So good. I'll drop you a line privately and brag some. :-D
It's not even fair. I hate righteous!Dean not for anything he has done or failed to do, but just because he is going to be right and Sam is going to have come back wrong and trusted the wrong people and been wrong. I'm . . . tired. We've been here before and I've made my peace with it but I don't think I can do it again.
The more I'm seeing this storyline develop, the more I'm convinced that something has been done to Sam (I like the idea of his soul being missing), and if that's the case, things like his not telling Dean he's alive and linking up with the Campbells make more sense.
If I'm wrong, then yeah--I have issues with him making the same mistakes again and again being in the wrong. But based on the preview we saw, I'm hopeful. I think Dean is going to learn something about his brother that is going to rock his world.
