Come on, you didn't think this would end with my last post, did you?

Of course you didn't. You know me better than that.

My intent with this post is thus:

I mentioned this in the last one, but I will go over it in more detail here. I said that it was perhaps not surprising or ironic that asingulargirl and sutlers were the ones who decided to be the fandom quality ( Read more... )

Now, you are welcome to think that I am, in fact, an exception to my own rule, given that I have both talent and skill, and I am simultaneously making this post.

Er, I don't really understand. Aren't you doing the same thing sutlers and ASG are doing? As in, coming off as a self-important asshole with a deluded sense of your own merit? (Unless that line was some kind of backhanded sarcasm that I didn't catch.)

I'm not a writer myself, but I vaguely remember reading your fic and the fic of some of your friends (the other ones who confronted sutlers and ASG) while I was still into FMA... I'm not saying that my taste in literature is perfect or sophisticated, etc., but I thought your work was "forgettable" and not particularly good, so... where on earth are you coming from? Your work is not nearly as great as your attitude seems to imply. :( This whole dramafest is like a party with egos inflating left and right.

People are allowed to have egos. The problem comes from when your ego leads to excessively shitting on others who don't measure up to your megalomaniacal standards ( ... )

Dude, if I'd known that posting a rant would bring you out, I'd have done it before now. :D

It's not the rant, it's the response. And that was only because I got my own peevish mini-rant out and down before apathy overcame me with a quiet, "Eh, screw it."

Yes, but my rants always bring out the idiots. It's their nature.

Well, I'm glad you overcame your apathy for a bit there, cos it's great to hear from you.

I wonder what the quality of Anax's fic has to do with anything. He is pretty laid back about accepting concrit; why not log into LJ and pony up? Hell, by making a post like this he's pretty much opening himself to be a target for criticism of his fics... it's no different, really, than what ASG or Sutlers did, although they have proved to be more sensitive to negative commentary than is reasonable.

Obviously the phrase "don't dish it if you can't take it" lacks meaning for some people. Anax happens to refrain from dishing out negative criticism except in cases where it is asked for. This is the critical difference in what ASG/Sutlers do and what Anax did here; not only do ASG/Sutlers explicitly ask for people to be as harsh as they want in the service of criticism, they implicitly ask for it by modeling the sort of criticism of others they find acceptable within the safe confines of their own LJs ( ... )

I liked ASG a lot. We were friends, or at least, I considered her a friend. We were LJ-married, and we talked more or less every day on AIM and in PM on IRC. I tried to help beta her fics and give constructive criticism on her writing. I also recced her stories in my LJ and recommended her as a judge of contests, because I trusted her opinion (in particular, I recommended her to Mikke as a possible judge of the Scimitar Smile contest). When she left the fandom and the CoE, I tried to be a good sport about it. I was dismayed, of course, but I figured, hey, that's life, fandoms change and sometimes people move on ( ... )
