Come on, you didn't think this would end with my last post, did you?

Of course you didn't. You know me better than that.

My intent with this post is thus:

I mentioned this in the last one, but I will go over it in more detail here. I said that it was perhaps not surprising or ironic that asingulargirl and sutlers were the ones who decided to be the fandom quality ( Read more... )

People are allowed to have egos. The problem comes from when your ego leads to excessively shitting on others who don't measure up to your megalomaniacal standards.

In this case, our dear anax is more calling them on their shit than doing the shitting, acts which are qualitatively different. Any attempt to equate the two as the same is either foolishness; or a double standard that only the shitters (in this case, ASG and sutlers) are allowed to make any level of criticism, and that critical responses (calling on their shit) are verboten.

Those who make public criticism about the quality, content, and motives of a work and its creator must be prepared to face criticism in turn about the quality, content, and motives of their own noise. Equating it with the first regardless of substantial differences in tone and content is a denial of the right of make criticism in the first place, so if you want to not appear foolish or a hypocrite, ASG and sutlers deserve even higher condemnation for their actions than anax does in responding. But that itself is another kind of criticism, which by your own reasoning is just the same as what you are "subtly" condemning by claiming equivalence...

None of this is actually to say that anax's commentary here is above reproach and cannot be touched, but the claim of pure equivalence is a massive fallacy in reasoning. You're ignoring grand differences in the content and point of anax's own criticism of ASG and sutlers's criticisms.

In short, calling someone on being a bully and being a bully aren't the same thing. Here, anax's own ego is completely beside the point, and much more benign in any case.

And no, I'm not part of this fandom. Or really of any fandom. I don't personally care about the quality of anax's writing, nor ASG or sutlers's, nor whoever the hell they were jumping on. Mainly I just feel a powerful urge to pontificate about excessively poor thought or hypocrisy whenever I come across it.

Dude, if I'd known that posting a rant would bring you out, I'd have done it before now. :D

It's not the rant, it's the response. And that was only because I got my own peevish mini-rant out and down before apathy overcame me with a quiet, "Eh, screw it."

Yes, but my rants always bring out the idiots. It's their nature.

Well, I'm glad you overcame your apathy for a bit there, cos it's great to hear from you.
