The hamster ate my net connection. Scampy the hamster is an accomplished escape artist and danger junky. The hamster ball was envisaged as a safe environment to allow him to roam around the house exploring to get his adventure fix, yet allow easy identifcation, easy retrieval and protection from the cat.
The abandoned and empty hamster ball in the doorway didn't cause immediate alarm. One of the children could have taken him out and omitted to clear away after them (not an unusual occurrence). Only after prolonged questioning, 'I didn't leave it there.', 'It wasn't me.' did the truth become apparent. Scampy had opened the hamster ball hatch himself and escaped !
The door of his cage was open, he was somewhere in the house. He wasn't behind the chest, his previous hiding place. Suddenly the cat's unusual sniffing around the skirting board took on an ominous nature. Listening silently for the tell-tale sounds of scampering, a faint scritch-scratch became apparent in a corner. He wasn't in the cupboard, he didn't appear to be behind the dresser. Then a pile of shredded wire insualtion gave his position away. Scampy was merrily munching his way through the telephone cables.
I coaxed him out from his inaccessible nook with a fresh carrot and grabbed him. I inspected the damage. One telephone out of action due to a severed plug. The fax machine taken out with a knawed through cable. The net connection down due to a stripped wire. Arrrggghhhh !!!! That damn hamster ate my net connection.
Patch, the good cat, was rewarded with a sausage for his ability to ignore both tempting household rodents and the yummy lure of electrical cabling.
