Marumo Japanese Kitchen and Run Amuk Hotdogs Unleashed

I've started putting up food/restaurant reviews up on my urbanspoon account (same name as LJ) so I sometimes forget to repost here.

It's not saying too much that it's the best omakase in Perth since I don't know of that many places which specialise in this style Japanese food. But certainly Chef Moe and his wife knows how to make wonderful food to die for. It has been a long time since the husband I have been excited about Japanese food in Perth.

As an opener to the seven course degustation menu, the tempura enoki mushrooms were light, fragrant and simply more-ish. The second course of gyu tataki (seared beef sliced thinly in a vinegared sauce) was equally light but had more punch because of the sauce. King prawn in a sushi roll, topped with salmon belly proves just how good fresh sushi can be. Sashimi of kingfish, Hokkaido scallops (deliciously sweet!), salmon and octopus made up the four course. Course five was kani kara-age where the batter was crunchy and flavoured delicately, and matched with chilli flaked mayo and matcha salt. The sixth course was a mini salmon-don with miso soup - an interesting finisher to the savoury courses for the night but really, felt just right. Dessert was Japanese glutinous rice balls filled with azumi beans (and topped with it) swimming in Bailey cream. Very decadent yet not too heavy.

Located in a small shopping centre in the middle of the suburbs, it's quite likely no one would think that such a gem would exist here. But it does and it's excellent value. It's a small place which doubles as a fish and chippery between 5-7.30pm (we must go and try as well). After 7.30, it transforms into a highly intimate dining experience. Don't expect fine dining, but it's relaxed and intimate, and most certainly unique.I wish them all the best and I've already booked my next dinner there!

And another one...

There seems to be a new craze in town to make fast food into gourmet food: burgers and now hotdogs. Run Amuk represents one of the new guys in town and they try to vary a very American staple fast food to meet customers' desire for taste and variety. Certainly, there was a variety of choices on the menu, but one thing that I found peculiar was that there was only the one kind of bratwurst (plus a vegan variation). I've long been going to Elmar's and Dubrovnik's on weekends for their bratwursts so I was a little disappointed that there was only the one type available (and a fairly mild flavour too). The bratwurst, like the bread, was meaty and hearty. I had a salsa dressing while the husband had the basic. It's really the toppings that sets it apart, and I just don't feel I can justify paying $11.50 for a hotdog with toppings, no matter how tasty the meat. Glad I tried it, but not sure how often I'd go back.
