I may make a more in-depth post about this later (provided I'm not too lazy), but this needs to be said:
Latest James Bond film Skyfall (2012, directed by Sam Mendes) is a step in the right direction for the depiction of gay and bi people in media.
This is a film where James freakin' Bond, of all people, is not only sexually harassed by the male antagonist, but also responds with a "What makes you think this is my first time?"
Yes, it's creepy and objectifying - but then, it is a Bond film. Female characters have been treated this way in Bond films for five decades. Surely this scene is a point in favour of equality. And Bond's response deflates the risk of the scene turning into another case of the "villain is gay because he's creepy and decadent" cliché we've seen far too often.
To Mendes and everyone involved in making this film: this is appreciated. I, for one, want to see more films where QUILTBAG sexualities are taken for granted. I'm willing to pay for them.
Make more.
