Arthur leaves his die in a pile of rubble in what used to be their apartment. He notices he doesn't have it when he gets to the corner, fingers searching it out in his pockets on instinct and habit, and in a flash of memory, he sees it, left on the table by the bed, which is probably not a table any longer, just like the room is rubble instead of a room. The street is a scene of destruction and chaos: people are screaming and crying and stumbling around looking lost, and there is a yawning fissure running down the middle of the street, what's left of the tiny European cars that are usually parked half on the street and half on the sidewalk tipped drunkenly all over what's left of the pavement. Further away, behind the newly broken skyline, half the city seems to be on fire, smoke and alarms and the ominous orange glow of a really big house fire spreading out across that whole arc of the horizon. Arthur consigns the die, and their apartment, and the whole damn city to his mental list of lost and abandoned things, and keeps picking his way through the pandemonium.

Eames had just stepped out to get another pack of cigarettes from the shop on the next street, not ten minutes before the world buckled and twisted around them all, and Arthur doesn't care if the world is fucking ending as long as he finds Eames alive before it does.
