You know, one of the things that surprised me most about Japan was how it was like, 10 degrees cooler (or colder, depending) just by being cloudy. During tsuyuu, even, if it was overcast, it was pretty chilly, then once the sun came out it heated up like a very very moist oven. DC, and to an extent, WV aren't like that. this morning it was already ( Read more... )

I have a zipcar membership and use car services (along with taking public transit).

IDK if it costs less than having a car, but it's certainly easier. It just requires different management.

I have been thinking about the zipcar idea. Part of me wants a membership, part of me thinks I wouldn't use it enough to be worth the yearly membership fee, and part of me is like HOSHIT YOU WANT ME TO DRIVE HERE WTF NO. lol.

I have a lot of the same reasoning for not learning to drive as you do for not having a car.

i grew up in an area that is very car-dependent, so never learning to drive at all never really seemed like an option to me. I did put it off a long while, though. When I started to get my license, they changed to a graduated system, so then i just put the whole thing off till i turned 18 and could get a full license. I'm glad I know how, but I do it so infrequently no one even thinks of asking me to help with the driving, even if I'm somewhere I'd theoretically feel ok doing it, and with people who could theoretically ask me.

Since I was a teenager I've lived close to train stations (or in the case of Melbourne, tram stops) and everything I've needed to go was accesible via public transport, and when I was younger I lived in a really small city so I could walk to everything I needed to get to. For me, I've just never needed to drive and it's so much cheaper not to, plus this way I've never had to drive drunken rellies home from the pub.

those reasons all make a lot of sense. it's really fortunate you've been able to live without a car. Maybe aus. is just better about it than the states are? or at least their bigger cities.

also for the same reasons, i do not have a car in amherst despite the fact i should really get one and i would be freer. i can make due. i need the monies more.

me too! it's just. lol sometimes i think i am really a city girl at heart, for things like that.

*nodnod* da yo ne! also, i don't want to change my license registration over to virginia. it is like a betrayal of everything my state stands for. namely, not being virginians. lol.
