the day i came home to WV, we stopped at two chinese grocery stories out in maryland on the way. The first one, Kam Sam, has a full-on bakery counter and seperate tellers and everything. Mom wanted bo lor bao, but they were out. they had some with red bean filling (which mom isn't crazy about), and other kind with some other kind of filling mom isn't too fond of. So i ask her if they have any (you know, like, hidden in the back, or under a rock, or whatever) and she's like, no we're out. We have these kinds (explains in chinese), i'm like no (in english), she's like well, how about these (in chinese), I'm like i don't think so (in english). She points to some local-made mini!bo lor bao in a tin and talks about them (in Chinese), I say i have to think about it (in English). I decide on some other things (mmmm my corn bun. :9) and finally decided to get the mini!bo lor bao (in English). It was pretty cool, because she just assumed i could understand her, even if i couldn't speak it. Just like i assumed she understood me, even if she didn't use english. I do think she probably knew english. of course, i don't know chinese.
Since they didn't have it, we stopped at another grocery store (the one dad goes to). Their pastries were kind of overpriced, but i tried anyway, so i could do a comparison. They just had a section, no counter, with the pastries and what they were listed underneath. in chinese.
