11 AM and i'm typing on a school computer; here until 7(30?). joy.
The computer's default language was set to French. It kept giving me errors, and I'm looking at the word 'Japanese' going, I know i spelled that right. I've changed it back now.
Went to office hours to talk about the thesis revisions some. They went really smoothly. I've got a lot of work to do yet, but. I can probably do it.
Also, he tells me that I have to give him as one of my references (in the job search thing which terrifies me), and that's like ridiculously :DDDDD-making. 「いつもお世話になっており、ありがとうございました」と伝いたいんだけど、英語なら、そういうことはそのようにformalizedじゃないよね。
yesterday was a long day. the last official day of class slipped by with hardly a sigh. yappa chigau yo ne, daigakuin tte. we kind of sat around and talked about the class for field methods. Likes, dislikes, which methods were useful for which types of data collection, which methods maybe needed to be rehashed if we wanted to get a certain kind of data. We got our final project assignment. Essentially, it's a three-page paper (no more than three pages. I think she means it this time), also talking about 'what we learned' in the class, plus a resubmission with corrections of all the other things we turned in all year. :| With an assignment like that, why is she even bothering at all? Oh well. shan't complain, because it's not like i couldn't use the break.
Jason: It's a pointless triangle.
Tone and intonation in P&P. I admit i didn't pay that much attention. There's no homework on it (obviously, since last day of class), and my language doesn't really use it. Plus I'm getting out after this, so i don't need to know. I mean, ok. Basic knowledge of tone might be helpful if ever I decide i'm going to learn Chinese, but. I don't need to know how to use ToBI to do that. Even just knowing the way it's transcribed in lx books isn't going to help, either, because whoever i'm learning from isn't going to teach it that way, so whatev.
Reminded Rob to put an example up. So now I'm using these next few hours before i meet Kaori-san (and maybe get free icecream y/y?) to write up my final P&P project. One of the best things is part two of the assignment. You answer one of three questions, the third of which is Have you noticed any aspects of the phonetics or phonology of your language that seem to be subject to sociolinguistic variation? Discuss (in about 250 words).
I am totally killing my hearing with this song because it takes the player a second to remember the volume setting whenever it restarts. But i would rather have no hearing (well, at the moment) than type this paper to the clack of keys, the hum of computers, and the suppressed sound of a lot of people in a long room all quietly panicking.
Last class was a discussion, and then people presented. Today is a (shh!) under the table make-up class (because it's study days, so we're not technically allowed to hold class) scheduled as a 'review session' so the last two people can present. It's really relieving to have finished mine last week, but at the same time it shouldn't be relieving, because omg 30 pages to write and i really don't know what i'm doing. :\\\ At any rate. that's from 4:30 in room 450 (how's that for easy to remember?), and hopefully we'll get to go home early.
Mikey: *filling out class evaluation* Does Debby have tenure?
Class as a whole: She's the chair! She's the chair.
This is funnier because she said it in such a loud voice--and the door wasn't totally shut. Debby (and Jermay) were standing out in the hallway waiting for us to finish. aiyah.
Got home around 8. putzed for a bit, writing notes about this paper out by hand, and putting off the actual typing up bit till after dinner. After dinner (which was a pork roast that i really think could have been done better. I didn't eat some because i thought it was sketchy) I proofread
sillyandmorbid's paper on Sunjata (first king (to iu ka?) of the Malian empire), who may or may not be fictional. Tonight i get to proofread Hirono's SLA paper. But I owe her for the ridiculous amounts of coding (checking) i stuck her with in february and march.
Then i went to bed, because. god i was tired. Woke up in a panic this morning, certain i'd slept through my alarm, but actually, it was like, 2 hours before it was set to go off. So i reset it an hour earlier, and +snooze, got up around 8:30. Went over the edits on my thesis, so i could ask something remotely intelligent when i went to talk to him, and that's it.
Gonna be another long day.
