if i tell you it won't be an oblique reference anymore.

ok, fine. Mythbusters' pirate special, discovery channel. Come to think of it, the chain did more damage than actualy shot did. ...though i suppose a dead pirate is a dead pirate.

It is too still an oblique reference!

Hooray for Mythbusters! And yeah, I don't think real pirates got extra points for the "carnage factor."

my one remaining question from the show is: the sand necktie or whatever, when they bury you up to your neck in sand below the tideline and then wait for the tide to come in. It would have taken a long time to dig back in those days, without electric cranes and stuff. And filling the hole back in would have taken a lot of time too. So i mean, if it were me, i wouldn't have stuck around to wait for them to dig and then bury me. And if i'm tied up anyway, then couldn't they just throw me overboard instead and save everyone work?

I agree. Pirates probably made it up just to strike fear into the gullible hearts of the populace. Besides, even if they really wanted to get their kicks watching someone drown slowly, they could just toss you overboard tied to the ship and watch you slowly lose all of your strength and finally go under.

Clearly we're too pragmatic to be pirates.
