not only could i only really sound out the kana, but then you throw in all your complicated kanji and so i really really can't read it.

Chinese (obj) taking (?) even though.
Even though you're taking Chinese.
The (?) is because I'm not sure quite what to call it off the top of my head. It's like the casual version of the ん in the んです construction, which is used to give an explanation or other additional information. Like, if you said, "ginkou ni ikundesu" it says, I'm going to the bank (and this is an explanation which answers your implied request for additional information).
