i'm way too lazy to write in two journals, so i will stick with cross-posting:
i would be lying if i said i have been thinking about this a lot, but on the way home from work today i was thinking about the fact the most generations, or moments in history if you will, have one word or idea associated with them.
the 30s has depression, the 60s love, etc...
so, i began to wonder what our time-frame would be remembered for and the only thing i could come up with was disposability.
everything we are is defined by this word. i obviously speak in terms of the collective we and not the specific we. there are no cliques. no air of superiority that you or i may actually do something that matters. in the end we are one and we must take equal blame in all of this.
relationships... disposable. the statistics offer a harsh reality of the chances for a first marriage to be successful. no one really cares about the idea of marriage anymore. it's not a question of morality but more that it's just too easy for people to back out. we want change. whether it's the toilet paper we use or the person we fuck. it's accepted for marriages to end. it's accepted for no one to care.
culture... disposable. we're now part of a global community. it has its benefits but we are also faced with the idea that no one knows who they are anymore. we have no ties to a father/motherland. the food we eat is 'fusion' the country a 'melting-pot'. we chat daily with people across the world. ignore the people that are across the living room.
while we're on the topic of culture, let's talk music. radio 'hits' every day. spewing forth shit no one will listen to tomorrow. are we going to be remembered for britney spears? thankfully, i doubt it. no one will know about our generation of songs showcased via ringtone. we have no beethoven, no coltrane, no beatles. we have cd singles turned coaster.
information... disposable. news hits headlines misses heads. we have conglomerates of i think i knows. definitions redefined by societal acceptance versus actual meaning. do we know what anything means? not particularly, we know what other people say they know. we know what happens to have been the last edit of a million-mile march through ignorance.
the world... disposable. we'll find a new one. so many planets in the universe, so many suns. so little care about what's happening here and now. planted a tree? who the fuck cares? i saw you drive that tree to the forest because i was following you in a second car to help.
so, here we are. have no fear, i will archive this soon and dispose of it as any post on the internet should be.
until then... i'm going to go switch to charmin ultra.
