Channing Tatum Talks Jedi Mind Tricks and His Cajun Accent in 'Gambit'

Last month, producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed that Channing Tatum will portray Gambit. While it was initially believed that the character will first appear in X-Men: Apocalypse, the actor revealed last week that 20th Century Fox may do a stand alone Gambit movie before throwing him into future X-Men projects. While we wait to hear more about when Gambit will be seen on the silver screen, Channing Tatum revealed in a new interview that he wants to use the Creole dialect known as patois for Gambit, which he compares to a "Jedi mind trick."

"I'm super hyped about it. I would say we're going to do something a little bit different. I don't know how to exactly explain it just yet, but he's a character's character, you know? He's got a serious Cajun accent. I don't know if you've heard a Cajun accent, but we're going to have to have subtitles at some time. He has sort of a Jedi mind trick thing that I want to try and fit in, where he speaks patois, so I'm going to have to learn patois, which is going to be really hard, but we'll see."

Negotiations haven't been finalized at this time, so it isn't known when Channing Tatum's Gambit will be heading to a theater near you. No screenwriter or director have been attached at this time, so perhaps 20th Century Fox is waiting until they have a filmmaking team built around the actor to make an official announcement.

As for Gambit's appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse, it may be some time before we know for certain, since that project may have a whole new set of issues to deal with. We reported yesterday that 20th Century Fox is reportedly trying to force director Bryan Singer off of the project, in the wake of a sexual abuse lawsuit that was filed against him.

Gambit comes to theaters in 2017 and stars Channing Tatum.
