good week

good things that happened this week:

1. proving the adage that if you make a stink about something for long enough eventually people will listen, they finally fixed my heat this week. instead of 45 degrees in my room, it is now around 80. i should probably turn it down a bit....but im still really happy that i just have it.

2. orgo lab tests are ridiculous. for the life of me i cant figure out how the average on this one was lower than it was on the first. for the first test, he had posted old tests from the past two years on the course website (its a new teacher, so none of us knew what to expect testwise and we thought the old tests were there as study materials) and drew his test verbatim from those old tests. i did not know his test would be like that and consequently i didnt do quite as well as i otherwise would have. i got 86%, which is usually pretty good on that sort of thing. the average was something like an 80%. for this test, he posted a 14 page worksheet with an answer key on the course website. once again he drew the questions straight from there. this time i was prepared for that and wound up finishing the test in 15 minutes (we got 90 minutes to do it). the average on this one was about a 73%. i got a 98% (147/150) which that doesnt necessarily prove that i know anything about orgo but i figure it cant hurt.

3. orgo finally clicked. this wasnt really this week, more of a "end of last week" thing that happened while studying for the test. that moment came where everything fell nicely into place and i immediately understood all of it and why i was doing what i was doing. it was great--i spent the two days before the test going over more stuff and wound up 29 points above the average (though i would have had a 90 if not for a retarded brain fart during the test. methanol acting as a nucleophile adds an OCH3 to a carbon, not an OH (it was written as MeOH...what a dumb way to go from 90 to 89)). before this test i would say i was holding a B+ in the class. at this point i figure if i wind up a standard deviation above the mean for the overall raw score in the class (final included) then im guaranteed an A. assuming the final exam average is a 60% (a liberal estimate methinks) that would mean i would need only a 73% on the final to get an A. that is very doable and its put me in a great mood for the past three days.

oh, and im addicted to scrabulous
