reading the New York Times' multimedia presentation about the Mitchell Report on steroid use in baseball:

"In March 2007, Sports Illustrated reported that in April 2005 David Bell purchased six packages of human chorionic gondaotropin, a hormone produced by women during pregnancy and used as a masking agent. According to the article, Bell acknowledged that he received the drugs but that they were for a "medical condition"."

hCG is not actually produced by pregnant women--it's produced by the fetus and crosses over into the mother and its one of the things that makes the placenta grow. Metabolites of hCG end up in the mother's urine and those metabolites are what pregnancy tests are actually testing for. So if David Bell bought a pregnancy test two years ago, it would have come out positive. I find that very amusing

what the hell kind of medical condition would warrant a male taking hCG?
