It Was At Least... Interesting.

So, on google-reader today I found this article, and it sort of pissed me off. Sort of a lot. Okay, in some ways I agree, because yes - people do that (make art for the sake of seeming "smart"), and I don't really enjoy that. But at the same time... I don't know. It's so subjective. Can you really say, definitively, this is what someone was doing? Or how do you judge something as good or bad? If I like something that's silly or low-brow or not particularly intellectual, does that make me stupid or any less intelligent? This guy is just as pretentious as those he's criticizing - actually, probably more.

I don't know. I tend to downplay my own smarts just because I don't want to ever end up like that guy. My philosophy is: like something just because you like it. If it's a catchy song, then yeah, I'm going to sing along! I love those emotionally charged moments, those unforgettable experiences, but not everything can be like that. And because of the sheer volume of things created in contemporary times, some of those moments are inevitably going to be missed.

I don't know. I really don't like that attitude - but the article did make me think. A lot of the comments to it are interesting, too.

ranting, random, stuff i find, i hate people as much as i love them som
