Character Name: Star Captain Resnick
Source Canon: Battletech/Mechwarrior
Community Tag: Resnick

Notes: Resnick's a semi-OC. His mission history is that of the player character in the Clan Wolf campaign for Mechwarrior 2. This game chronicles the Refusal War.

Background: Resnick is a young Clan Wolf mechwarrior. Like all trueborn, he was born from an artificial womb and the genetic makeup of him and his sibko are a mixture of several of the clan's most prominent mechwarriors. From early childhood, his life was one of tests, as were those of his sibkin. Those who did not pass the tests for being part of the warrior caste were filtered out and reassigned to a lower caste. In 3053, barely 17, he defeated his sibkin in his trial of position for the rank of mechwarrior. In that fight, he took a lighter mech than his sibkin, with the intention of forcing a close in fight. He was ultimately succesful by clubbing his enemy with his mech's arm, a tactic considered dishonorable by most clanners. Though he won his trial, the other passing sibkin teased him about it, leading to several trials of grievance. Ever since he has been self conscious about the use of physical attacks, though it is noteworthy that he pilots a mech with hands.

Assigned to Beta Galaxy, the next two years distinguished him as a ristar. Though the Truce of Tukayyid had halted the clan's drive to Terra, there were plenty of opportunities to see action against Inner Sphere opponents throughout the Wolf Clan Occupation Zone. It was due to these duties and the influence of his COs Conal and Vlad Ward that he developed an alignment towards the crusader philosophy. The general technological primitivity, poverty and political corruption of the Inner Sphere convinced him that conquest was necessary for the good of their citizens, to say nothing of restoring the Star League.

In 3057, the Refusal War broke out and Resnick was assigned to Alpha Galaxy, the most prestigious possible unit. Though he had his private suspicions that this was an attempt to place him under warden influence by his superiors, he outwardly gratefully accepted. He was assigned to the command of the Golden Keshik itself, as a special operations star that would strike behind the Falcon lines. The unclanlike nature of these operations troubled him, but his ego would not allow him to deny the post. And indeed he grew into it, seeing combat against fellow Crusaders throughout the war and becoming somewhat more flexible. Though he rose to the rank of star captain, he never actually commanded more than a star, due to the nature of the operations he was conducting. This was probably a good thing as he was cold and distant to his inferiors even by clan standards.

As the war dragged on, he became gradually more aware of Khan Kerensky's plan: send Alpha Galaxy into the inner sphere, to found a Clan Wolf in exile. Such thoughts were heavy on his mind as he prepared to leave for Morges and the last desperate battle of the Refusal War. He had witnessed clan warriors acting little better than Inner Sphere "barbarians", killing civilians. And he had seen honorable behavior from those same barbarians. His faith in the Crusader cause was shaken, though not broken.

It's at this point when his jumpship's Kearny-Fuchida drives malfunction, bringing him to Terra a lot faster than he'd anticipated...

Personality: In many ways, Resnick is the typical proud trueborn warrior. He is fiercely protective of his own honor, and reacts to slights against it with anger and a call to trial by combat. Though not as openly contemptuous as some, he's convinced of the superior abilities of trueborn warriors and of the clan way of life in general. To his mind, it provides the only possible way for a person to reach their full potential by allowing them to focus on what they're most suited to. Also it restricts the horrors of war to duels between proffesionals born and bred for this task. His experiences in the Inner Sphere have convinced him that controls on warfare are necessary and he can think of no better system for this. And while many other warriors believe this for the simple reason that it's what they've been told, Resnick's been exposed to other ways of life and devoted time to trying to study Kerensky's intent, rather than taking his writings as recieved wisdom.

Yet while he may come across as haughty, he is much less so than others of his kind. He will work with and may even enter into a kind of awkward friendship with freeborn he considers honorable. This is primarily about avoiding certain behaviors such as:

-Going back on one's word

-Abusing a member of a "lower" caste (IE a civilian)

-Cowardice

-Ganging up on an enemy in the battlefield without urgent necessity

If you don't do these things, he's willing to give you a chance. In fact among non-clanners he may be relaxed in ways he wouldn't normally be among his own kind. He doesn't have to constantly participate in the Social Darwinist games of oneupmanship that are part of a warrior's daily routine. That's good for him, because he has insecurities he's never really given voice to: That his career as a ristar is nothing more than a fluke, the circumstances of his first trial of position, his position as a crusader in a primarily warden clan (he's been told he'd be happier as a Jade Falcon, something he bristles at), his love of sweeping classical music (acquired as isorla in the occupation zone) and his lack of close relationships with his sibkin, the only people a clan warrior is socially permitted to grow close to. These things don't much matter in freeborn society, something he'll find strangely relieving.

Speaking of relationships, he's completely unfamiliar with romantic love, except as something important to freeborns. That doesn't mean that he's completely lacking in needs though. However sexual needs, being completely divorced from reproduction in warrior society, are something he feels free to acknowledge and propose the fulfillment of with no embarrassment at all. He also has no understanding of why anyone would consider homosexuality taboo (and indeed his few partners are themselves a mix of men and women), and incest would take him a minute's thinking. He also has no idea why anyone would consider women unsuited for the role of warrior either, or about gender segregation in general, and would probably regard sexism and racism of any form (save again the superiority of those bred by eugenics) as a primitive superstition. On the other hand he'd be reluctant to engage in any kind of relationship with a civilian because of the percieved power difference. This doesn't prevent him from having what a freeborn would instantly recognize as an admiration based crush on Vlad Ward, who may not even know he exists.

Both in and out of combat, Resnick plans carefully. His temper tends to trip him up though, sending his better laid plans crashing to the ground. He's working on controlling it. Sometimes he succeeds.

In summary, Resnick embodies the characteristics of his clan's totem: cleverness, patience, bloodlust and a keen attention to his place in the pack.

Capabilities and Resources: Resnick is a product of the clan breeding program, his own genetic material being a combination of that of great past warriors of the clan. From a very young age he's been tested on this and is a cutting edge mech pilot. He also has training in hand to hand combat and the use of ranged weapons, as these are both acceptable venues for a trial of grievance. He's free of genetic defects of any kind and in peak physical condition. He can recite most of the Remembrance from memory.

He also has Enhanced Imaging tattoos, allowing him enhanced control of his mech and the ability to look directly through the mech's sensors as if they were his own eyes.

Robot Name: Summoner-PL "Pyre Light"
Robot Description: A custom variant of the Summoner omnimech. Resnick asked his technician for "the maneuverability of a light mech and the firepower of a heavy", and he did his best to comply. It differs from the standard in having a different weapon/equipment load. To make room for the extra equipment, Resnick's Summoner uses ferro fibrous armor. It mounts eight tons of armor, respectable protection but less than many other clan mechs of that size.

The Summoner-PL has a MASC system, which when activated, allows it to accelerate to up to 118 kph, at the risk of some leg damage, remarkable for a 70 ton mech. It is also equipped with jump jets for additional maneuverability.

The one drawback to this design is its tendency to run hot. Three double heat sinks provide barely enough heat dispersion.

Loadout:

-Left arm mounts a large pulse laser, for long range firepower. Below it is also mounted a hand pod, unusual for a clan mech. This makes a physical attack possible and also allows the mech to hold onto handholds in space battles.

-The right torso pod mounts a two tube short range missile launcher and a ten tube long range missile launcher, both using a half ton each of normal and inferno rounds. Used together, these two missile systems are capable of shutting down most Inner Sphere mechs with a rapid heat spike. At the very least they discourage firing back, something useful in the kind of hide-and-seek warfare Resnick favors.

-The right arm mounts an LB-10X autocannon with a ton of ammo. This is essentially a mech sized shotgun, most effective at close range. It is one caliber less than the largest possible for a weapon of that type. Discharged at point blank, it can destroy lighter mechs with one shot. This side also has a hand.

-Under the cockpit, a laser anti missile system is mounted, for defense against incoming LRMs. With the autotarget system switched off, it becomes identical to a small pulse laser, providing additional close range firepower.

Like all clan omnimechs, it contains a targeting computer and CASE.

As an omnimech, the Summoner-PL's weapons can be quickly swapped out in the field for others.

Suggested Event List:

Mission 1-"Wolves On The Border"
The Kearny-Fuchida drive malfunction destroys his jumpship as it arrives in the solar system. As the only person in a mech at the time (running a combat simulation), he is thrown clear of the ship and soon picked up by the only surviving dropship. His technicians quickly fit him with an orbital drop pod. Before they can issue a batchall, the current antagonists attack the dropship. The dropship captain sacrifices him/herself to ensure Resnick reaches the surface, ejecting his mech against his protests to avoid enemy mobile suits and fighters. In freefall, he faces off with two mobile suits and manages to destroy them.

Mission 2-"Fresh Carcass"
The dropship Pack Mother crashlands on earth. Resnick races to recover it himself, download the data in its computer banks and then wipe the originals and blow up as much of it as he can. However some of the PCs have gotten there first. In desperation, he challenges one of them to a Trial Of Possesion for possesion of the wreckage. Wether he wins or loses, he will join the player characters out of respect for their skill and realization that he can't wage a one man crusade for posession of the earth.

Mission ???-"The Jaguars Leap"
Some time after Resnick's integrated himself into life on the White Chalice, another jumpship arrives from clan space, this time containing several clusters of Smoke Jaguare warriors. Resnick must advise the commander of the White Chalice on how to use a batchall to cut down on the number of Smoke Jaguars they will have to face. The PCs fight a running battle against the Jaguars, forcing them to expend ammunition. Depending on the PC's conduct, the Jaguars may break the batchall and commit their full force if they believe honorable combat is not being conducted.

My mech's navigation systems have confirmed it. This is indeed Terra. I am both elated and saddened by this news. I have believed my whole life that my clan was destined to take this most precious of prizes and become the IlClan. Being the first clan warrior to set foot here should have filled me with emotion that made me unashamedly weep. Instead, I feel only dull oppression around my thoughts. I am unable to think of a single scenario, save the dishonorable use of nukes and the extremely unlikely idea that the commander of the forces here would agree to a trial of possession, that would allow me to take the planet. And being so far from the occupation zone, I cannot even report on the defenses here to the keshik. I face a long future hiding out here, waging a hopeless guerilla struggle. Perhaps I can disguise myself as a laborer and buy passage aboard an outbound jumpship. It is a distasteful idea but may be the only possible one.

First priority is to secure the dropship wreckage. I estimate some fifty kilometers remain between myself and the wreckage of dropship Den Mother. I

Resnick abruptly put his pen and paper down, stowing it in its usual compartment below the seat, as his sensors beeped an alarm to him. Enemy contacts, showing up red on the scope...

Outside, the foothills of the Rocky Mountains beckoned him, and it was in that direction that he turned his Nova, jolting it sideways in a hard right turn that brought him away from open ground. More of those strange mechs, no doubt, the ones mounting what appeared to be autocannons with open feed mechanisms.

He activated his jump jets. Smoke and exhaust spewed from Pyre Light's feet and ass, lifting the 70 ton omnimech bodily into the air, landing him solidly between several foothills. He sighed as the mech hit the ground again. His training, his instincts and the Wagner playing through his neurohelmet's speakers were all telling him to turn back and engage that patrol. Going through the mountains would take much more time and felt cowardly, but it could not be helped for the moment. He couldn't be spotted.

It was one of many steps in the long and arduous campaign he had ahead of him.
