The happy face news media is, as predicted, is making a big deal out of south Texas hurricane event; so much so, that the Governor has declared certain southern counties as "disaster areas" for federal and state aid purposes.
I submit that this is more about political intrigue to siphon public money and services, largely undeserved, into south Texas.  They cite the decimation of tourist, agricultural and public utilities as reason for this declaration, emphasizing cotton and soybeans which, by the way, are usda subsidized crops anyway -- meaning they are guaranteed to the producer by the taxpayer's pocketbook already -- so, where is the loss I ask?
The influx of tourists are more effected by fuel prices than this category-1 storm could ever do, and I predict that the school and collage fall-break crowd will appear as usual to their south padre island, port isabel destinations one way or another.  Kids will be kids, so this storm event may actually act as a magnet for them.
Public utilities has the largest self support group mentality of any industry I know of, and they usually get the services up and running in no time.
In a related matter, this rain event may even wash out the mouth of the Rio Grande so that it will actually flow into the gulf again like a normal river should.
In short, there's no way they can make Bonny another Katrina!
