On a wire they were dancing, two kids, no consequences (three)

I took a seat beside Alex and got my books out while he rummaged around in his bag. He eventually brought out a blink 182 notebook which caught my eye.

“You like blink?” I asked.

“Yeah, I love them so much! Why, do you?” Alex replied.

“Yes, I didn’t think anyone else but me and Rian liked them,” I said.

“Oh, my friend Zack loves them too. It’s nice to know that someone else loves blink, I thought there were only two of us in this school - we should all meet up sometime and hang out,” Alex said. It sounded suggestive but maybe that was just me overthinking another conversation.

Rian is getting sick of me asking him whether or not he thought another guy was flirting with me. I always ask for a second opinion, because I don’t want to come out of the closet just yet… And anyway, I haven’t even had a proper boyfriend or anything yet. Yeah, there was that one time at that festival where I hooked up with some guy I was talking to; turns out he wasn’t even gay, just really wasted…

Alex blinked through his adorable eyelashes at me. God, if this guy was gay AND into me… I think I may be the luckiest guy in the world. “Yeah, you any good at video games?” I asked.

“Oh, Zack loves video games but to be honest, I’m okay but I’m not the best in the world,” Alex replied.

“Me neither. I just watch Rian playing them and talk, sometimes I sneak a beer into the house and we split it,” Jack explained. I hadn’t meant to mention the beer because, hey, I was sixteen. And if my mum caught me? I would most likely be dead…

“Haha, nice. I’ll ask Zack and see if he wants to come. Looks like Zack and Rian would be good friends,” Alex laughed. I love the sound of his laugh, deep and husky yet light and joyful, the perfect mixture.

“Sure, does Friday sound okay? My mum will be on a night shift at work; we’ll have the house to ourselves,” I said, hoping that Zack and Rian would be quick friends and I would get Alex to myself.

“Should be, Zack and I were planning to go out but we didn’t know where to go, guess we do now though,” Alex smiled at me. Today was going to be a good day.

At lunch Alex sat with us, Rian couldn’t believe his eyes. A popular kid sitting at OUR table? Everyone else was staring; we usually just sat on our own in the corner but now? Every two minutes someone would come over and talk to Alex about football practice or gossip about how “Stacey is going out with Mark” or something else entirely. I lost track of how many people were coming over. Zack just sat there and talked to Rian, he looked like he was used to being ignored and I wouldn’t be surprised.

Alex glanced over to me while he was talking, I must have looked stupid because I was staring in disbelief with my mouth in an ‘o’ shape but he laughed so much. The girl he was talking to turned and gave me a dirty look.

She placed a hand on his shoulder and said goodbye. I can still remember the look of pure anger in her eyes. It was easy to see that the whole time she had been talking she wanted Alex to mention something and the subject would turn to how pretty she looked today or how nice her perfume smelled (I felt like choking to death would have been nicer than smelling her perfume).

“She looked annoyed,” I said.

“Yeah, jeez, how many times did she try to flirt with me?” Alex said, laughing.

“Too many, I lost count.”

“And she thinks I would go out with her? No thank you.”

I gave him a confused look; she was pretty hot, so why wouldn’t he go out with her? Apart from the fact that all she thought about was herself.

“Oh, um, can I tell you something?” he whispered. My stomach started to fill with butterflies.

“Yeah, sure. Anything,” I smiled at him. He stood up and I followed suit. He took my wrist and pulled me through the cafeteria, as I looked about I saw that no one was watching us, why should they? It’s just plain old me, why would anyone care? Alex pulled me into the bathrooms and checked the cubicles before standing in front of the mirror and fixing his fringe; he frowned at it and turned to me.

“Promise you’ll keep it a secret?” Alex asked.

“Promise,” I replied.

“I’m gay.”
