morning at the mirror Originally uploaded by

It's the weakest finger so it has less chance of stretching the delicate skin under my eye less I gain unsightly wrinkles. I was 17. Do they still say that? Or is it one of the everchanging makeup rules?
My Mom wasn't into makeup much. Or basic girly upkeep. Infact I don't think it was until the discovery of Estee Lauder about 8 years ago that she even wore base. She didn't need it though. Because of this I was a bit of a late bloomer. I learned the beauty basics on the fly. In middle school I remember Muffy (I think Melissa was her real name, but she never went by it) poking at my leg at my pantyhose and asking me why didn't I shave all that hair? I went home in tears and it was only then that my Mom gave me my first razor. She waited for me to approach her. She didn't believe in preventative humiliation, I guess.
It wasn't until college that I learned the "joys" of waxing, manicures and pedicures. For a few years I went crazy, working extra to keep up a frantic beauty schedule.
These days, it's morning in front of that mirror with my hair pulled back with a band. Makeup goes on in 5 minutes. A minute or two is dediacated to plucking and tweezing. Special occassions add the torture of a straightening iron. Pedis are a luxury at once a month. Waxing - once every 5-6 weeks. And manis are practically a thing of the past thanks to the drastic fingernail cutting routine that massage therapy demands.
Oh, and every morning a few minutes are taken to give Bronte a drink from the sink in spite of the fact B and I recently purchased her a $40 kitty fountain that has a stream of filtered water for her pleasure 24/7.
