History

I've always been interested in the 1960's era in American history. I've felt some kind of connection with those people marching and protesting and even the ones literally fighting for civil rights and liberties, and it has always felt like such an important part of our history. When Barack Obama entered the national political scene I knew that now is the extension of then, just as important. This is what they marched for, what they needed to perhaps finally solve some of the misplaced stereotypes, and for a very young black generation coming up now, the aspiration to the highest most powerful position in our nation is now, and for the first time, a real possibility.

I was definitely wrong in saying that now is only as important as then. Now is some scary mix of the civil rights movement and the great depression and is probably the most important time in any person who reads this journal's life. Americans are scared. I know I am. and depressed. It feels like one day I'm going to open my front door and its going to be just ruble and anarchy. I know that "now isn't the time for panic" but my bank account says panic. And the interest rates on my credit cards say panic. And the dwindling number of people sitting down at my bar, and the dwindling likelihood that they'll leave me more than 20% regardless of how great my service is for them tells me that I need to panic.

One thing is for sure in this uncertain time. Something is about to change. Yes we are chanting that we need it and want it at every political rally across the country, but I don't think people are going to like the change that happens. And while I think voting for Obama is the safer choice in a time when I want to be sure I'll have health care and where we're spending 2 billion dollars a day on a war in Iraq that isn't being handled properly, I know that the change that is happening now will not be a pleasant one for anyone. The whole world is getting poorer. Fast. I don't want to be pessimistic, but I don't see any floor in sight. When I'm not working, trying to work, or looking for a second job, I make it a point to turn on network news and watch my country's savings and retirement plans fall closer and closer to what certainly will be remembered in history (if there is history after this) to a devastating stock market crash.

$700,000,000,000 more dollars are about to be dropped into circulation, almost doubling the amount of money in our financial system, which will force inflation, cause the dollar to fall in value and will perpetuate the high prices of necessities. I know, I know...it was apparently the only way we could stabilize our economy and "its better for me this way" but I can't help but feel like the massive nature and the pressure to pass something that big so quickly is going to bite us in the ass when history is finished with us.

I don't know about you guys, but it seems very likely to me now that the Mayans were right. 2012 HERE WE COME!
