I read this article a while ago about how people were listening to history podcasts through the pandemic, perhaps because the perspective brought some comfort. I guess i've been doing a similar thing, listening to Pirate History Podcast as a dinnertime break from present day drama.
I wonder if perhaps the difference between reading stories as a young adult versus as an "old" adult is you start to see yourself more as a background character than one of the heroes. The world is shitty, and there are heroes, but most of us aren't heroes, we're just living in the shit, trying to do the best we can, and that's okay.
