A Week of Mourning and Putting the Pieces Back Together

This week is gonna to be the one week mark of Hurricane Katrina.  It seems like the more that I hear about the reports that are going on in the LA and AL areas that were hit by the hurricane, the more my heart gets ripped out by the stories that I hear about the death and looting going on.

The mayor for the city of New Orleans lost his cool on a radio show earlier this week b/c the government had not showed up with the help needed to keep looting down and medical needs for those who were critically ill or were approaching that rate.  From what I heard on CNN this morning, the mayor said a few choice words that were not too pleasant to be put hear in the journal but long story short, he was tired of promises and wanted action immediately. He, also stated, that he would not do anymore press conferences until help was coming.

I was looking at a few websites a few minutes ago ( Kentucky Baptist Convention and the North American Mission Board) and they have teams in the disaster area serving meals and have shower units in those area where folks can get a hot meal and a shower.  Right now, the city of New Orleans will be the center of media attention for a while to come but the city has gone through a living hell.  People had lost their jobs, homes, and even family members as a result of the hurricane.  There is a desperate need for people who can adopt a family in their home while they find some means of getting back on their feet.

I know that locally, the city of Hopkinsville (KY) was hit with local floods well before the affects of Katrina took place.  I know that several homes were flooded by the heavy rains that resulted in some homes being inhabitable (non-livable) because of the damage. The county received some flooding that one local church had to hold Sunday services at a local church in the city because the church was flooded completely as a result of the flood.

Just keep the folks in New Orleans, Biloxi, MS and right here in our backyard in our thoughts and prayers as they continue to grasp the situation that has took place as a result of the flooding and the hurricane.
