How many times had it been that he'd successfully avoided being assigned a Padawan? Eight? Nine? Of course, none of that mattered anymore. All those masterfully crafted speeches about why one of the Masters was more suited to train someone might as well have not happened. This was the worst case scenario of all worst case scenarios.

And that smug look Master Starkiller had given him when he spoke the words.

Teagan hadn't even argued. There was no argument that would have worked and the Council knew it. Or did they? Truth be told he hadn't even considered arguing. Did he actually believe he could finish the training Chase has started? Did he really think he was worthy enough to train someone as special as Daphne Lightheart?

"Kriff," he mumbled, not caring how rude it seemed. He brought his hands to his face and sat down in the waiting area. "Kriff, kriff, kriff."

While she shared his frustration, she also definitely didn't want to watch him beat himself up over it. That wouldn't help either of their situations.

Maybe, she told herself, it was for the best. Maybe the Force was trying to tell her something.

"It could be worse," she offered, but it came out more of a question than a confident statement. She flashed a smile that was weaker than usual and shrugged. "I mean, they could have just sent me back home."

"Or to the agricorps," he said sarcastically from behind his hands before letting them run down his face and fall into his lap. "Come on, Daphne. They'd revoke my Knighthood before they'd let you go."

"Look," he said, pushing off on his knees to stand. "Even if they had wanted to send you home I wouldn't have let them. Even if that meant requesting to have you as my apprentice. Besides, you said the temple's your home now," he added with a grin and a light flick on her arm.

That brought a real smile to her lips, her eyes brightening instantly. She wrapped her hand through his arm, starting to draw him down the hall away from the ominous looking doors.

"It is, and there's nowhere else I'd want to be. So we can focus on the positive! There's plenty I'm sure you can teach me, and now I have a great excuse to bug you about it every day, instead of feeling like I'm taking up your valuable time." Her eyes sparked with a teasing twinkle.

His feet shuffled beneath him until his pace matched hers, allowing him to straighten up and look more confident than he felt. His stomach had fluttered as soon as she touched him, pushing away the lingering irritation. But that didn't stop him from raising his hand to his abdomen so that her hand could settle into the crook of his arm.

"If teaching you techniques was all I had to do to get you to bug me you'd have been assigned to me a lot sooner." He turned to smile at her but before he could his eyes widened as he realized what he had said. "Not that you bug me! I just mean... Well, you don't bug me," he blurted out before turning red and directing his gaze forward again.

Her smile cracked wider, not that he could see it anymore. It allowed her to study him for a moment, watching the color bloom in his cheeks.

"Glad to hear it, since you're officially stuck with me now," she said, trying to keep her voice on a positive lilt entirely. "So where do I start?" With a bit of giggle, she wiggled her fingers near his face. "Master Skywalker." It wasn't mockery, just recognition of the unusual and silly circumstances of her new apprenticeship. At least there were things to laugh about in the situation.

They stop in front of the turbolift doors and Teagan presses the button to call it up to them before turning his gaze back to Daphne.

"Well you can start by not calling me Master Skywalker." He nudges her a bit and smiles. " I don't want you thinking of me differently. Chase is still your master. I'm only filling in for now. Just... think of me how you want to think of me."

"I suppose they can't tell us what to think, can they?" she said, with a defiant smirk. "... Not that I don't trust their judgment," Daphne added quickly, not wanting to sound as if she were doubting them. She had a lot of respect for the Council, after all, but she also highly prized her independence.

"But I was talking more along the lines of where are we going."

Contrary to what most people believed, Teagan tended to disagree with the Council on the bast majority of things. Being the poster boy for the Order had meant they had reprimanded him more often than the others, trying to mold him into what they imagined the greatest Jedi Knight could be. Needless to the say his respect for the Council was only skin deep ( ... )

Teagan's easy smile reassured any lingering doubts she might have about where they were going to go from here, and she looked down at the slack-jawed youngling with amused eyes.

She gently put a hand on his shoulder and steered him carefully out of there, patting him on the head once. "Take a holo. It'll last longer."

With a chuckle, she pushed the button to close the lift doors, leaving him staring after them with eyes bulging out of his head.

Her eyebrows lifted as she glanced over to Teagan next to her.

"So your plans ended right here, huh?" she said with a smirk.

"Yes, right here. That youngling was your final test. I wanted to see how you'd handle the pressure," he says with a grin. He bows low and theatrically, deepening his voice to add to the effect. "There is nothing left that I can teach you, Padawan Lightheart."

Without coming up from the bow, Teagan presses the button on the lift that will take them to the Room of a Thousand Fountains.

"You know," she teased, "if that's really what you consider a great test of my abilities, I'm not sure what that says about your level of confidence in me." She folded her arms jauntily across her chest, one hip jutting to the side in a particularly sassy stance. "... Not that I'm asking for you to send me off to my inevitable death or something. A happy medium. Would be nice."

Finally standing up straight Teagan crosses his arms in return, playfully glaring at her before responding. "I'm not sure I like your tone, Padawan." I love it.

Unable to keep up the facade he grins again and faces forward as the turbolift doors slide open. "To be fair, if it were up to me I'd Knight you right now," he says motioning for her to exit the lift first. "As far as I'm concerned this is just a formality we're being forced into."

"Then it's definitely too bad it's not up to you," she said, still smirking, even as she stepped out of the lift.

"Not that I mind too much. Once they Knight me, they might do all kinds of crazy things, like saddle me with ungrateful apprentices."

"Well for now you'll have to settle for being saddled with a ruggedly handsome master." He follows her out of the lift before setting off in the direction he intended, pausing for the split second it should take her to fall into step beside him.

"I'm serious, you know," he said as he glanced at her. "I know you're having some problems but I can't think of a better candidate for Knighthood. I'll do everything within my power to make everyone else realize that. SO long as you do the same."
