So, I'm working my way through Season Four of the New Doctor Who (as it was just released on InstaPlay for Netflix.) Yesterday, I watched The Unicorn and Wasp, as you probably already guessed.
IT WAS SO CRACKY AND AWESOME!
So where to start?
Christie - I loved her characterization. I found it soothing that the author took into account the fact that she'd be unerved by the appearance of a real mystery rather than being all gung-ho AHA, this is my forte! Plus, the hidden titles were a great scavenger hunt (and hazardous to the health when played in relation to any sort of game.) My favourite has got to be Murder At the Vicar's Rage.
Doctor and Donna - They were such a lovely couple in this (not like that shippers!) obviously enjoying each other's company and zeal for fun. I do not think that the bit about the Doctor replacing Lance was intended to imply any romantic possibilities, just that she has a new focus in her life, a man who manages to make her feel more important and therefore her endeavours worthwhile.
I think this was quite a fun historical and I had a total spaz fit over how lovely the dresses and hair were done. The Unicorn's first outfit DO WANT. Maybe not as much as I did with Human Nature/Family of Blood (c'mon, they had school uniforms, that's cheating as a surefire way to hit my clothing squee nerve,) but almost as much.
Plotwise, it was utterly ridiculous, but so marvelously - Who at the same time. Not really sure how to describe that feeling, but it just felt right. The pastiche parts were perfect: all lights going out BAM someone is dead, statue falls on head while person stand still, but manages to croak out a couple words before death. They have the genre down pat.
Vicar remind anyone of Turlough? No, really? Not at all? Okay.
Wondering though, the first cliffhanger scence before the theme tune. He supposedly has no control over his transformation. How did he know the guy was looking at his adoption papers? That's the only valid reason I can think of for him to get angry right away. I guess, we're supposed to assume he planned on killing him with the lead pipe (what the hell, total gratuitous Clue reference,) but lost control?
And I disagree about the fact that this episode hurt minorities. Sure, they did die, but they were THERE weren't they? I already love Roger/Davenport (then again, I'm a sucker for forbidden, homosexual master/servant love) and totally writing more fanfic. Anyone willing to beta? (Handholding is canon, yay! So, I guess they like some good BDSM? Takes note.) Yes, the Lee/Donna, Turlough and Brigadier, Five/Turlough, Tegan/Nyssa will also be finished somehow. Although, it did urk me that no one seemed to mourn that much for the various deaths that occured, although the "poor footman" Donna line had me wibbling.
Anyways, the penultimate scene was wonderful. Hah, they were all lying of course. The one about the Colonel faking his disability was priceless. Plus, Donna chompin' away in the background and Ten's moving finger of doom.
In closing: NO THAT'S TOO SALTY!
