Silence was deafening. It made it all too easy to hear the rapid beating of her heart. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath. What was she supposed to say? The words were jumbled in her head incoherently. She couldn't seem to sort any of them out to make an actual sentence. A large part of her wanted to wrap her arms around him and pull him close, to murmur soothing and loving words to him. But she couldn't. Her feet were planted firmly on the ground and nothing could change that. Nothing could make her do something that her body just wouldn't do.

"Say something," he whispered in a voice that was almost a plea. "I need you to tell me. Tell me I'm not crazy. Tell me you feel the same way."

Her brown eyes searched his face, wanting to meet his gaze. To look into her eyes as she told him the truth.

"Angelina, say something," he pleaded again, his voice breaking suddenly. "I lost… I can't…"

His voice trailed off, encompassing their world into a dark silence again. He had lost Fred. That's what he was about to say. He was trying to put her in the same category of his dearly departed twin. Angelina's tone grew cold as she snapped, "It's not the same thing."

George's eyes flew to her face. "What?"

"It's not the same thing, George. I'm here. I'm right here!" She threw her arms out. "I'm not going anywhere. You are the one pulling away. And I'm trying to give you the time, but-"

"Angelina, I-" he started, but she interrupted him.

"Shut up and listen," she instructed her bossy nature that had surfaced fully during her short time as the Gryffindor Quidditch Captain came again. George's beautiful brown eyes widened as he stared at her. But he was listening again. "It was a horrible loss. We both know it. Yes, George, I will never understand, but I lost people too! I lost friends! I lost him too!" She was practically shouting now.

"I love you, George. I want to be there for you, but you can't keep pushing me away, and then pulling be back when it suits your fancy! I have a life. I'm your friend. I love you."

It was life she had to say the words. Her heart was beating rapidly and her breathing was suddenly hard. If he couldn't or wouldn't say those words back, she'd be gone. She'd go and then she'd come back when she finally could deal with his lack of reciprocate feelings. She couldn't make him love her, but she could make him, eventually, be his friend. But not right away, not when she would be basking in the glow of his rejection. She had more pride than that.

George took a few quick steps toward her. Reaching up, he gently caressed the side of her face with his hand, cupping her cheek in his strong and familiar hand. "I love you, Angelina Johnson. Always have."

She leaned her face into his hand, sinking into his touch happily. It was so hot, so familiar, so perfect. Twisting her face slightly, she kissed his palm. "George," she breathed his name, but she didn't have a chance to finish her thought. Suddenly, he was wrapping his arms around her, pulling her toward him and pressing his body against hers. They were a perfect fit.

Sliding her arms around his neck, she leaned forward, kissing him. The kiss was searing; it embodied her. Finally! her mind cried. It had taken him so long to do this, to give into his feelings. He was never one to dwell on things, but when he lost Fred, he had lost part of himself. She understood that, but she wasn't one to wait around either. It was either now or never. He had chosen now, thank Merlin.

"I love you," he whispered, pulling back and looking to her brown eyes. His gaze was smoldering, making her feel shivers run down her spine. He was perfect.
