judearaya for looking over the first two chapters for me in a pinch.
Author's note: Hummelson!verse! For the purposes of this story and verse, Blaine is not/never was a junior. He's In Kurt's grade, they graduated together and they have an apartment in New York. Rachel is still close by though. oh and I'm sticking with my whole Kurt going into fashion instead of the performing arts, because, well I'm not changing my whole verse just because season three has completely jossed it.
If interested, you can find the rest of the Hummelson!verse
here on my masterlist but I don't think it's absolutely necessary to read the whole verse to understand this story.
Chapter 1 - What about us? - part 1
Guess we've been talking too long -
We know what we need separately.
You say the honeymoon's over.
I don't want to push, but what about us?
It's ringing in my head.
it's not what you say, it's what you haven't said.
- What about Us - John Barrowman
Blaine stared at the piece of paper in his hand. Wow. He did it. He couldn't believe he actually did it. Well, he could, he had done it once before after all, but that was four years ago. A lot can change in four years.
He let out a shaky breath as he set down the letter on the desk. Well, that answered that question. Now he just had to figure out what to tell Kurt.
Kurt.
The man he loved.
The man he had followed to New York just to be with.
The man he told everything to. (So why had he not told him about this before?)
The man he had been with for almost five years.
The man he had promised himself he would marry.
That fact was probably the single reason he felt like he could do this, because they had been together for so long, and he just knew that Kurt was the one. He knows without a shadow of a doubt. Kurt is his future. Four years ago Blaine thought that he could spend the rest of his life with Kurt. A little over a year ago he knew he needed to marry Kurt, and now, Blaine still knows that they would be together for the rest of their lives. And that made all the difference in this decision verses the one he had made before.
He was going to spend the rest of his life with Kurt Hummel. He just had to do this before they started that forever. He hoped that Kurt would understand. Because if he didn't...
No. He would. He had to. He understood before, four years ago. He had been so understanding, so unselfish, so willing to put Blaine’s needs before his own. So he would. Kurt would be okay with this.
“Geez Blaine, who are you trying to convince? Kurt or yourself?” Blaine muttered. He glanced at up the clock. 6:10.
Damn.
He was running behind. He had stared at that damn letter longer than he realized. Kurt would be home any minute from his internship at Vogue; they had dinner reservations at 7 and Blaine hadn't even showered yet.
Did he dare skip it? No, he decided taking a whiff of himself. Definitely should not skip the shower. Besides, maybe Kurt would join him if he came home while Blaine was washing up.
That was an idea...maybe he should be slow about the shower to make sure Kurt joined him. Yeah, that was definitely a good plan.
He would gladly miss his reservations for some time alone with Kurt in the shower.
Pushing the letter out of his mind, he stripped and climbed into the shower, his thoughts occupied with what he and Kurt could be doing once his boyfriend got home.
~
When Kurt came home 5 minutes later, he heard the sound of the shower running, and the distant hum of his boyfriend singing. He raised his eyebrows as he looked at the clock. Seriously? They needed to get going or they were going to miss their reservation. Though...all things considered, as hot as Blaine looked in a suit, wet and naked were an even better look on him. It could be worth being late to join him...even if it meant delaying his plans for tonight. He thought of the little box nestled deep in his personal closet where Blaine would never find it. Would the night be ruined if they were late, or would he still be able to go through with his plans? Blaine's voice soared on a sweet note and Kurt smiled, making up his mind. He wandered through the living room and down the small hall to their bedroom with a master bath and dropped his bags beside the bed.
Today had been a good day. The buzz at Vogue was that Makenna would not be returning to her position as second assistant to the Editor and chief once her baby was born in June in order to focus on raising her family. Meredith Girard would need a new assistant and he wanted to be that assistant. Sure it wasn't exactly a junior editor position, but there wasn't an opening for that yet, and he was just an intern. Once his internship was done in 5 months, he would be leaving Vogue for good unless he could find an opening somewhere, anywhere, before then. And second assistant to the Editor in Chief was a very good 'in' to have.
Besides, he was damn good at his job. All the scuttlebutt amongst the wardrobe staff (and they would know, they heard everything) was that if Kurt applied, he would get the job.
Flying high from this elation, and the elation he knew he and Blaine would be sharing later that night, he started to unbutton his shirt to join Blaine so that he could share his news and well, celebrate with Blaine. That's when his eyes fell to the mail sitting on the desk.
His hands paused on the third button down when his eyes landed on the torn open envelope and the letter beside it. It had the Harvard logo on it. Harvard? Why was Blaine getting a letter from Harvard?
He picked up the letter and felt his eyes go wide and his hands begin to shake when he read the words printed on it.
Congratulations! We're pleased to inform you that your application has been accepted and you have been offered a full academic...
The words blurred on the page and the letter dropped from his shaking hand as his world started to crumble around him.
What...?
Blaine applied to Harvard? Why would he do that? He knew Blaine would be going to law school after graduation in six months but he had been under the definite impression that the plan was to go to Columbia which was 17 minutes away, and not Harvard which was five hours away.
Why would Blaine choose to go so far away from him when he knew that Kurt's dream was to stay and work at Vogue full time? Kurt couldn't follow Blaine there. They'd be forced into a long distance relationship.
And Blaine hadn’t even discussed it with Kurt! They told each other everything! Why wouldn't he tell him this? Ask his opinion? Why was he being so secretive about it? Unless...
All thoughts of joining Blaine, and the rest of his plans for the night, were banished as Kurt sat down hard, angry tears rushing down his face as the only logical explanation his mind could come up with entered with a heartbreaking sense of finality.
Blaine Anderson was planning on breaking up with him.
