Inside a polished and bare office, in one of the most renowned talent agencies in Japan, six boys were sitting, very different one of the other and of a range of age from 14 to 18 years old. With the exception of a pair of boys, who were talking in hushed tones, they were mostly ignoring each other, not understanding why they were in the office still, after all, they have just been told that they were going to be a group; they thought they should be able to go and let out some stamina.
The news hadn’t been received with gladness.
KAT-TUN was the name of their new group and it evoked different moods in its new members: anger, depression, frustration, not all so positive and they just wanted to leave, but they were told to wait for another announcement.
Finally, after minutes of uncomfortable silence, there was movement behind the door, and the President of the agency entered the office, along with a young black haired girl.
“Boys” He spoke, voice grave but gentle “Now that you are a group, you are in need of a manager” His statement was met with the harsh glares of four members and the clueless expression of the other two.
“A manager?” The oldest of the group asked, after realising that his other bandmates weren’t going to stop glaring at their boss “But, wouldn’t we be under Julie-san or Iijima-san?”
“Well, technically you will be under Julie’s management, but you can’t truly expect her to take care of you completely, right? She has other groups to manage, so your manager will be Soratami” He said, signalling to the girl standing by his side.
“Nice to meet you” The girl bowed, expression serious and eyes focused on them, making them squirm, her gaze was penetrating “My name is Soratami Natsuko, and I will be your manager, let’s work well together” A ghost of a smile adorned her pale and delicate face, but nothing more.
“What? Are you serious old man? She looks almost as young as us!” One of them yelled, about to stand up but was held by the oldest. The girl frowned but didn’t say a word.
“Tanaka-kun” The Kitagawa sighed, exasperated “YOU don’t have any said on the matter, you just have to listen and obey, besides, Soratami here has enough experience and ability to be your manager, she worked as assistant manager for Arashi, so I have to say that you guys have a great manager”
The news that she had been with Arashi calmed Tanaka but the President could still see that they were very dissatisfied with the new group.
“Now, I’m going to leave you to get to know each other”
Once he left the other looked at each other with grim expressions and then to their new manager, before one by one started to rise from their seats, with all the intention of ignoring the girl and the others.
“Where do you think you are going?” Soratami spoke then, clear voice loud enough for the others to hear and turn to look at her. They expected her to be confused, or to look lost because of their behaviour, what they got, however, was a very stern expression.
“Any other place, where I don’t have to see these guys faces” The leader, Ueda Tatsuya, a blonde with a rocker style answered. No one was happy about the fact that they were together, and the rest of the group weren’t shy when nodding in agreement.
“I still can’t believe that old man put us together, I mean, I would understand if it had been Kazu and me, but the six of us?” A brown haired boy said, his eyes glaring and his arms crossed.
“We are just too different, it doesn’t make sense” The oldest of the group said, his brows furrowing under his bangs.
“This is just bull…” The one who had interrupted the meeting earlier started, growling but he was stopped by a loud noise, which surprised the six and made them jump.
Turning to see their manager, they realised she produced the noise, after hitting the desk with her hands. She looked up at them, eyes flaring and, instinctively, they huddled closer, afraid of her expression.
“As Johnny-san had said, you guys were chosen to form a group, whether you like it or not, you are in this together, you are KAT-TUN” She glared at them, voice powerful even if she hadn’t raised it “If you guys want to whine about it like a bunch of babies crying for food, go ahead,  I’m not going to stop you, but that means that your ambition and your courage to follow your dreams equals to zero, which in that case, I refuse to work with you” She straightened, hands on her hips and glare in place.
Someday, they will think that was the very first time they saw that expression on their manager, the first one of many.
The six gulped but faced her, feeling somewhat ashamed of their outbursts. She was right. Even if they didn’t like it, they were given an opportunity they couldn’t waste.
“So, you better tell me right now if you will work together in your best behaviour or if I should tell Johnny-san to forget all about KAT-TUN and leave you in the junior’s pool forever” All of them shook their heads, panic obvious on their faces “No, what?” She raised an eyebrow.
“We will work together” The one who looked like the youngest said his voice an octave higher because of fear.
“And the six of you promise that? I can’t have just one of you promising that, it’s either the six or none at all, one or three of you won’t do” Their manager declared waiting for their answer.
“We promise” The newly formed group answered together. The girl smirked in triumph, pleased with herself.
“Good, good, you are learning” She said “Now that you have agreed, we must work on the dynamics of the group, plan your future as background dancers for Koichi-san and future presentations…” They shared a look among themselves tuning out her chat.
Their manager was scary, there was no doubt about that, and they didn’t like each other’s guts. Well, but every group must have an interesting beginning.
